Snorkel Saves Fire At Unfinished Forest Park Apt
Firefighters used a snorkel to reach and extinguish a blaze in the 4th story of an unfinished apartment at 227 Desplaines Monday night. Charles Hennessey and Jack Hester from Clinois Bell Telephone Co spotted a glow from a short circuit near the baseboard and alerted the squad. Chief Del Marousek credited the snorkel with preventing attic damage and praised the telephone workers for their quick call. Earlier, at 6 AM, a burning sedan at 309 Elgin damaged only the cushion and a carpet.

Two Forest Farkers Carl Orland and Larry Sylee have earned All-State honors after statewide competition. Carl plays oboe and joins the All-State band while Larry, on bass, is selected for the All-State Choir. Both students are juniors at Proviso East.

Toby Zapfel, Forest Park restaurateur, dies at 78
Toby Zapfel a longtime food and refreshment entrepreneur who catered to River Forest and Forest Park clients died last Tuesday at Westlake Hospital after a short illness. He was 78 and spent 62 years in this country after arriving from Austria at 16. He co owned Toby's saloon at 16 Lathrop with John Boehm, later called Boehm and Zapfel but known as Tobys. Services were held Saturday at Dreschlers with interment at Mount Emblem. Surviving are his wife Eleamore, sons Toby J and John F, and stepson Gordon C Kosche.
