Civil Defense alert sirens will be tested Friday from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. CST as part of Operation Alert. Radio and TV stations will go off air for 20 minutes after the alert signal, and listeners are urged to tune to CONELRAD frequencies 640 and 1240 for information and instructions.
Homemade cars will race June 11 as local Cub Scouts host their first Soap Box Derby. Races start atop the Circle overpass and roll south to Lexington. Comm. Harry Blue volunteers to ask car owners to remove vehicles that afternoon. Mayor William Meyer says the council will cooperate but warns against crashes near parked cars.
The Forest Lions Club hosts its annual dinner dance on May 20 at the Oak Brook Polo Club. Tickets cost 6.50 each, limited seating, with music by the Arl Helms orchestra. Committee members include Jack Riley Jr and Pete Burgio among others.
Recreation night league managers met last night at the village hall. Those named are asked to contact the organizers at FO 6-09.
A five member American Legion and a five member VFW committee led by Elmer Licht plans the annual Memorial Day events. The parade assembles at Circle and Randolph at 1 p.m. on Tuesday May 30 and services for deceased servicemen follow at about 2 p.m. Contact Elmer Licht for participation details.
The Proviso High Citizens' Advisory Committee urges a 1.75 million dollar bond to add classrooms at Proviso West. The plan, approved by the Board of Education, calls for a fall 1961 referendum limited to classroom construction after a prior 1980 referendum for 3.5 million was defeated. Committee members Ralph Abel, Karl Hartneck, and Betty Reich are named.
The American Legion appeals for volunteers for Poppy Day May 25 and 28 to raise funds for disabled veterans and their families. More than 50 000 volunteers will wear poppies to remind the public that those who served should not be forgotten. Call President Erma Brandt at FO 6 1582 if you can help.
The ordination and reception for Richard O. Schroeder will be held at Forest Park Baptist Church in Harlem and Ixon at 4 pm Saturday. Schroeder is a Detroit native and Wayne University graduate who served as youth director at Calvary Baptist Church in Chicago before joining Forest Park a year ago. He was elected pastor and will lead the church with his two children. Members and friends are invited to attend along with regular services.
In a Bill Gorey Camera shop window at 7451 Madison, a display of 36 coins marks special Forest Park cars. The exhibit, drawn from the Forest Park Centennial book (1956), is sponsored by the Oak Park Coin Club for National Coin Week.
The trampoline business at Hur lam and 16th Street last summer plans a license re application. Mayor Meyer read a letter from the attorney claiming changes in grading fencing and public address system. Public notice will follow when a license is filed. Neighbors led by James Gallagher and George Leninger questioned the nuisance claim.
Early returns from the Cancer Crusade show Forest Park likely to exceed last year’s total. Chairman Fred Pociak says $1600 has already been collected and urges anyone who missed a donation to mail a check or money order to Cancer 7412 Harrison Forest Park. The drive emphasizes educational leaflets as part of the Society’s nationwide program credited with saving many lives.
St John Lutheran School hosts area Parent Teacher Conference this Sunday. Rev W M Wangerin PhD will speak on Heavenly Home Builders with River Forest as speaker. Registration 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the church Narthex. Fee 1.00 includes buffet supper and entertainment.
The Junior High PTA will meet Tuesday at p.m. in the school cafeteria. The program is Our School Board Reports Progress Problems and offers a chance to meet the newly elected school board members. P T A officers will be installed and refreshments served by the homeroom mothers.
The Village Council appointed George Koch of 911 Harlem to the Recreation Board. He fills the vacancy caused by the resignation of Laula Moran who is moving out of town.
The Walther Lutheran High School hosts the annual Gym Night titled Walther Olympics on Friday and Saturday starting at 7 p.m. The event features a soccer game, tumbling, wrestling, and other competitive activities.
