Uncle Johnny Long Retires After century of service in Rutherford County
A longtime Forest City merchant known as Uncle John or Uncle Johnny Long has sold his drug and mercantile business to Charles E. Hardin of Forest City. Long, born 1857 in Logan Township, Rutherford County, traced Forest City’s growth from a sparse, forested town to a 4000-strong community. He recalled Klan era exiles, early stores, and fire destruction that reshaped the town’s street grid. Hardin, son of Mr and Mrs R Hardin of Forest City, takes over with plans to continue the business.
