Ruth erford County Club Merchants Day Friday Meeting

The April Rutherford County Club meeting is Friday at 1 p m in the Haypes Memorial building Cliffside. Speaker J B Ivey & Company Charlotte manager Mr avid Ovens will address merchants with humor and a message of interest. A club lunch is offered. reservations through Mrs L C Garvin. Soprano Miss Gertrude Gower and pianist Mr Eugene Craft will accompany the luncheon selections.

Woman's Club Elects Officers for 1930 31

A general meeting at City Hall April 10 elected officers for 1930 31. President Mrs F E Webb and other officers named along with treasurer Mrs W W Richbourg and auditor Mrs Hoyle Elliot. No Pinehurst convention delegate due to finances. May plans to consolidate departments. Also notes on Dramatic and Music clubs meetings and hosts.

Prof B L Smith to Head Shelby Schools Next Year

Capt Benjamin L Smith, former superintendent of Forest City Public schools and later Rutherfordton Spindale Ruth system, was Friday night reelected as superintendent of the Shelby school system for 1930 81. Mr Smith moved July from Spindale to Shelby to assume the Shelby schools post after an eleven year career in Rutherfordton school circles.

Forest City men win sweepstakes with Flora May hound

Mrs Griffin Recuperating After Presbyterian Hospital Surgery

Mrs Clarence Griffin of Spindale underwent a series of operations at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte last Thursday. Friends report the procedures were highly successful and she is recovering, with plans to return home soon.

Three couples wed in Gaffney licenses list

In Gaffney on Apr 14 three couples from Rutherford county received marriage licenses. The couples are Worth Walker and Mary Hargett of Rutherfordton, Maurice Mooney of Kings Mountain, and Virgie Hicks of Avondale. Miller London and Ruth Layton of Forest City also received licenses.

Sixth Older Boys' Conference Reported Well Attended

More than two hundred Rutherford county boys attended the sixth annual Rutherford County Order Conference at Spindale House. Sessions featured addresses by Rev Floyd G. Rogers and local leaders, with athletic events, a glee club concert, and a points tally led by Thomas Blanton.

Miss Ethel McSwain of Forest City won the Birtie Beauty Shop contest last Saturday, taking the top prize in a local beauty competition that drew community interest and several entrants.

Carolina Gas Seeks Forest City Gas Franchise

Mr. R. P. Freeze and associates of Carolina Gas Co from Hendersonville petition Forest City board for a franchise to install and operate a commercial gas plant. A $5,000 performance bond guarantees start within sixty days and completion in twelve months. Up to $150,000 expected to be spent on the plant.

Dr John D Biggs Mirrors Kiwanis Talk on Depositors

Attorney B T Jones praised Dr John D Biggs liquidating agent for the defunct county banks at a Kiwanis meeting in Rutherfordton. Biggs warned the work would take months, pledging to protect depositors while seeking best results. The club planned Farmers Night and heard reports on the cotton contest, a harp contest, and the Bolling Gap road. The Carolina Gas Co project dominated council priority, promising 65 local jobs and $150,000 in early work with material purchases from Forest City. Mayor Davis visited Hendersonville to study the plant, while Forest City and Rutherfordton Spindale pushed for franchises with taxes around 1,500 yearly. Forest City may become divisional HQ.

Bolling Gap Road May Be Taken Over

The new highway from Bostic to Morganton via Golden Valley South Mountain and Bolling Gap may be added to the state highway system soon, with Rutherford county residents involved and a formal opening planned on the Burke Rutherford line near Bolling Gap. The route, recently improved to the county line, shortens travel between Forest City and Morganton and provides a quicker link from Shelby to Morganton.
