Capt Benjamin L Smith, former superintendent of Forest City Public schools and later Rutherfordton Spindale Ruth system, was Friday night reelected as superintendent of the Shelby school system for 1930 81. Mr Smith moved July from Spindale to Shelby to assume the Shelby schools post after an eleven year career in Rutherfordton school circles.

Carolina Gas Seeks Forest City Gas Franchise
Mr. R. P. Freeze and associates of Carolina Gas Co from Hendersonville petition Forest City board for a franchise to install and operate a commercial gas plant. A $5,000 performance bond guarantees start within sixty days and completion in twelve months. Up to $150,000 expected to be spent on the plant.

Attorney B T Jones praised Dr John D Biggs liquidating agent for the defunct county banks at a Kiwanis meeting in Rutherfordton. Biggs warned the work would take months, pledging to protect depositors while seeking best results. The club planned Farmers Night and heard reports on the cotton contest, a harp contest, and the Bolling Gap road. The Carolina Gas Co project dominated council priority, promising 65 local jobs and $150,000 in early work with material purchases from Forest City. Mayor Davis visited Hendersonville to study the plant, while Forest City and Rutherfordton Spindale pushed for franchises with taxes around 1,500 yearly. Forest City may become divisional HQ.

Bolling Gap Road May Be Taken Over
The new highway from Bostic to Morganton via Golden Valley South Mountain and Bolling Gap may be added to the state highway system soon, with Rutherford county residents involved and a formal opening planned on the Burke Rutherford line near Bolling Gap. The route, recently improved to the county line, shortens travel between Forest City and Morganton and provides a quicker link from Shelby to Morganton.
