Sixth Rutherford County Older Boys Conference Opens

Spindale aims to host a major Rutherford County Older Boys Conference with Friday organization session at 2 o clock. A Saturday evening concert by the Asheville Normal School girls glee club at the Spindale House follows an opening banquet led by E Smart. Delegates from distant parts prepare to attend with plans for the 1931 junior officers election and a full athletic program at Central High.

Enroll 83 Students in Study Course

Eighty three students enrolled in three study courses this week. The towns represented include Rutherfordton Forest City Spindale Alex Cliffside Avondale Henrietta Hill Spring Pleasant Grove and Jolene. The Sunday school program meets nightly at 7:30 o'clock with Rev O Thompson of the Methodist Publishing House Nashville Tenn delivering one course.

Local Boys on U N C Honor Roll

Chapel Hill April 8 report shows 19 UNC students on the winter quarter honor roll after a faculty ruling allowed optional class attendance for upperclassmen. A total of 32 students earned A grades (95 to 100) across courses, including G. D. Freeman of Rutherfordton Y. L. Holland and D. C. McClure of Forest City.

Polk Rutherford C E Union Meets At Forest City Church

The Rutherford Polk Christian Endeavor Union gathered Friday at Forest City Presbyterian Church. A 5:30 picnic dinner followed by a quarterly meeting in the auditorium. Ellenboro society led devotion and Ellenboro Junior C E won the union banner for strong work. The union plans to meet again in July at Union Mills with about one hundred youths present.

Rutherford County Ministers Association Meeting Report

The Rutherford County Ministers Association met at Spindale Community House with Rev. B P Parks C S Shanks from Forest City and Rev Oscar L Simpson from Nashville attending for the first time. They endorsed closing filling stations Sundays and urged churches to help workers enjoy Sabbath rest, offering to hold services or funerals at the County Home without pay.

Primary department of Avondale public school will stage two works The Tom Thumbled-Lime and The Maid and The Golden Slipper in the school auditorium Tuesday night April 15 at 7 30. Tickets or goldfish may be obtained at Courtney's Fen Cent Store.

Funeral Rites Held For Mrs Barber In Hendersonville

Hendersonville Apr 7 Funeral services for Mrs B J Barber who died suddenly at 79 were held Thursday at 2 pm from the Bakers Art Gallery apartments with Rev Dr Arthur Jackson officiating. Four sons served as pallbearers. She was born in Enfield England and came to America with husband B J Barber in 1881. he died in 1911. Survived by five sons and one daughter Mrs Herbert Rattray of Columbus Ga George Barber Chattanooga Frank Barber Asheville Forrest Barber Forest City A F Barber Hendersonville Hugh Barber Charleston. Funeral Held for Mrs J W Silver in Forest City

Mrs J W Silver 49 died at Hazelhurst farm after a weeklong illness caused by acute nephritis. Funeral at Providence Church led by Rev R P Fikes, with burial in Providence Cemetery. She was daughter of W Spain Butler and Mrs Butler, survived by husband S W Silver and children Hicks J E Pearl Lloyd Carl Myrtle, plus four sisters.

Thief Takes $200 From Ellis Grocery Safe

In Spindale on April 7 a package containing about $200 was taken from the safe in W. C. Ellis’s grocery office. Ellis had placed the money there and left briefly. upon returning the package was gone. No clues have been found to identify the thief.

Revival Ends After Two Week Presbyterian Meeting

The local Presbyterian church concluded a two week revival on Wednesday night. Rev. I. B. McElroy Jr. of Rutherfordton preached during the two weeks. Attendance was good and church cooperation was strong. The pastor Rev. Wm. C. Rourk announces a communion service will be held Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Mr. McElroy delivered steady sermons each service.

Rutherford County Bank Report Filed Details Debts and Stockholders

Rutherfordton April 7 report by state bank examiners on Rutherford County Bank and Trust Company and its Spindale and Union Mills branches was filed with the Clerk of Court. The six hundred page typed document itemizes assets liabilities deposits notes securities and shows each depositor's balance. A stockholder list with names stock amounts and assessments was filed last week.

County Wide Music Week Planned by Local Clubs

National music week will be observed as county wide by the Woman's club and sponsor groups including the Lions club of Cliffside Henrietta Caroleen the Kiwanis club of Forest City Rutherfordton the County club and Woman's club of Rutherfordton. Formal Opening of Bolling Gap Road Celebration

The formal opening of the Bolling Gap road will be held Saturday April 19 with an all day celebration and picnic near the Rutherford Burke county line. The road will connect Golden Valley and Bostie with Morganton and Burke county and, when completed, will be a major highway from Bostie to Morganton. Attendees are urged to bring a basket. Efforts aim to have the route designated as a state highway with Forest City men optimistic it will be the next route reviewed by the state highway commission.

Hicks Reveley joins Lake Lure Coffee Shoppe as hostess

Lake Lure Apr 8 Mrs Lollie Hicks Reveley of Rutherfordton has accepted a hostess position at the Lake Lure Coffee Shoppe and Gift Shop. The shop recently remodeled adding sitting room and rest rooms. G Blackwell of Hayne died in Columbia after a monthlong illness. Funeral held Wednesday at Green's Creek Baptist church Polk County with interment in the church yard. Hollis Girls Practice Economy for Graduation Dresses

Hollis high school senior class acts on Live at Home Week from Gov. Gardner by using Rutherford county cotton for graduation dresses. Class day dresses will be white crepe, senior banquet at Hotel Charley Shelby, by Principal J. J. Yarlton. Juniors and sophomores wear gingham for exercises. Ellenboro Bank In Splendid Condition

After two Cleveland county banks closed this week wild rumors spread that Ellenboro Bank was involved. Cashier E E Harrill of Ellenboro Bank said the Ellenboro bank is in a splendid condition and has no relation to the defunct banks. A formal statement will appear next week and officials urge careful reading to avoid harm. Also noted is Courtney's Ten Cent Store offering a large Easter toy selection.

Forest City Considers Gas Franchise

The Forest City board of aldermen may award a gas franchise at Thursday's meeting. R P Freeze of Hendersonville, manager for Carolina Central Gas and Electric Co, will attend with a Chicago representative to discuss installing gas lines serving Forest City, Rutherfordton, and Spindale. The firm operates over forty plants and aims to offer cheaper gas than electricity while minimizing street disruption by pushing in pipes rather than cutting streets.

Harris High to stage Pandora operetta this Friday night

Harris High School fourth to sixth graders present Pandora in Greek style costumes at the auditorium Friday April 11 at eight o clock directed by Dalton Morgan Kennedy Pearson.
