Wilson County Vocational School launches a distributive education program for veterans in Floresville. The curriculum covers retailing merchandising finance and service sales with routes to running a business. Courses include store operation office skills accounting and public speaking under Mr Jarrett in the Air Corps era.

Teams Tighten Up In Floresville Softball League

The Floresville softball league features eight teams tightening weekly play. Double headers occur Tuesday and Thursday under lights at Tiger Field, drawing a fairly well filled grandstand. Recent results include Sinclair 7 over Herbie's and Lions Club 6 over Vaclavie's, with Catholics 11 Vincent Studio 0 and Sinclair 13 Vaclavie’s. Two July Fourth Celebrations in Wilson County

Wilson County hosts two Independence Day events on Friday. Wilson County Farm Bureau stages its fourth annual barbecue supper at Hermaon Sons Hall Path with meat and sausage served from 4:30 pm and entertainment from 1:30 pm. Poth and Yorktown of the Bluebonnet League play baseball at 8 pm, prizes at 8 pm, followed by a dance. La Vernia Chamber of Commerce sponsors a big July Fourth with baseball rodeo dancing and other attractions, including two rodeos at M and 8 Rodeo grounds at 2:30 pm and 8:00 pm.

The onion season nears end in Floresville Poth area as growers face hindrances to early planting. Floresville shipped 50 carloads to date, Poth reported 29 carloads by rail and about 20 by truck. Poth also shipped 17 carloads of carrots in early May.

Eagles to host July Fourth home game in Floresville

Floresville Eagles baseball set to play a tough holiday game Friday July 4 at 3 p.m. against Fred's San Antonio club, a leading team in the Spanish American League, at B A Jimenez Park on the San Antonio river road. Last Sunday the Eagles fell 5 to 4 to New Mexico Cafe of San Antonio. fielding and hitting were off though the visitors fielded well.

City and School District Board of Equalization Tax Adjustments

The Floresville City Council and Floresville Independent School District Board of Equalization plan property tax valuation increases to cover mounting operating costs. The district rate rises to 1.25 per 100, up from 1.00, while city valuations will also be adjusted. The boards met two days, with adjustments in about 90 percent of renditions, and residents will be notified by Monday. They reconvene July 10 at the city hall to discuss opposition and decisions.

Soldier Martinez Reassigned to 90th Field Artillery Battalion

Private First Class Santiago Martinez, son of Ramon Martinez of Floresville Texas, has been reassigned to the 90th Field Artillery Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division in Osaka Japan. He entered the Army on July 9 1946 and received his training under Major General Charles J Mullins Jr. at Eighth Army headquarters.

Floresville Opens Watermelon Shipments in 1947 Season

The 1947 Wilson county watermelon movement began after a slow start with only seven carloads shipped last week. This week saw a strong rebound with 27 cars leaving Tuesday night and 40 cars on Wednesday from Floresville via the T and N O line. Prices ranged from $1.00 per hundred weight for melons 28 pounds and up, to 75 cents for smaller fruit, with local buyers listed as Donaho Mills Ventur and Inness Bros. Cars also reported from Poth and Stockdale, indicating a broader regional uptick in shipments.

Knife Wound Suffered by Refugio Cantu Leads to Arrest

Refugio Cantu was brought to Blake Hospital from Saspamico with two knife wounds in the stomach. Raphael Vasquez was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Ace Fuller Jr. on a charge of assault with a knife. Hearings Monday resulted in a $25 fine plus court costs. Cantu’s injuries were not serious.

Dallas Suit For Declaratory Judgment Involves Wilson County Lands

Dallas district court filed last week a declaratory judgment suit against the trustee of the late Wirt Davis estate and heirs over mineral rights in Wilson County. The case centers on a 1914 agreement making the signers equal partners in all mineral rights across 24 Texas counties, involving about 50 000 acres in 64 tracts. Percy Davis leads plaintiffs including Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Humphreys and others, with ties to the Republic Building Co and Republic National Bank, tracing the Davis family’s long frontier land holdings from Hardin County origins.
