Personal Records on Fall of the Alamo Published

Dr. John Sutherland’s Alamo account, edited by his granddaughters, Annie and Mamie Sutherland, is published to mark the Texas Centennial. The narrative, drawn from his notes and survivor interviews, traces the siege from January 1836 onward and aims for accuracy, with family archives and Texas University files referenced.

Floresville And Poth Stores Close July 4th

Floresville and Poth business houses will be closed all day Saturday July 4 following an annual custom. No definite Floresville celebration planned. Kosciusko plans a big celebration and Sutherland Springs will host an all day entertainment.

Skarke Takes Over City Bakery in Floresville

F A Skarke, longtime Floresville baker, has taken over City Bakery from Wm Real. He plans to merge the two plants, bake at the Skarke location, and run sales from the former Real building. Real family left for San Antonio. locals wish success to both parties.

Bonus bonds district total reached four fifths of a hundred

Postmaster Lee McDaniel reports 919 bonus bonds totaling $45,950 have been turned in for collection to date. He notes no trouble in handling and distributing the bonds and they are being paid out as rapidly as they are returned from Austin.

Wilson County Farmers Sign Work Sheets Under 1986 Program

Wilson county farmers in the Agricultural Conservation Program signed work sheets late due to government delays. Five consecutive days of rain destroyed much of the onion crop and caused grass growth in cotton and peanuts. Farmers chose to plow under soil-depleting crops to qualify for grants, degrading soil and delaying aid.

Centenni al Celebration Barbecue Planned in Kosciusko

Kosciusko plans a Centennial Celebration and Barbecue on Saturday July 4 on St Anns School grounds sponsored by Rev Father B C Kaminski of St Anns Church. He has been in Floresville arranging events expected to draw a large crowd from Wilson and nearby counties. Dinner and supper will be served.

Pillars Dedicated To Wilson County Vets

The gateway to Floresville was dedicated Sunday afternoon June 21 to World War Veterans of Wilson County. The ceremony featured honor guards, a plaque reading Dedicated to the World War Veterans of Wilson County by the American Legion Auxiliary 1936, a 30 second moment of silence, a saxophone solo, and remarks by Judge W. O. Murray on behalf of Wilson County veterans.

Joe McDaniel Nominates for Wilson County Treasurer

Floresville resident Joe McDaniel formally announced his candidacy for Wilson County Treasurer as a Democrat. He previously served as County Commissioner and Justice of the Peace. McDaniel said residents know him well and he would appreciate support in the upcoming primary.

Feast and Exhibition at Sokol Hall Next Sunday

A big picnic feast and free gymnastic exhibition will be held at Sokol Hall near Floresville next Sunday June 28 beginning at 11 30. A sausage dinner with trimmings will be served and the afternoon program features music singing speaking and more Sokol gymnastic displays as locals prepare for the central Dallas festival next month. Mass calisthenics drills with poles skipping ropes and workouts on bars and rings highlight the program.

New Relief Program to Start in Wilson County

A new relief program will go into effect in Wilson County on July 1 under WPA guidance. Asa Murray announces his candidacy for district clerk. A county welfare plan shifts to caseworker supervised relief, expanding access beyond completely disabled families. The Wilson County Family Welfare Agency will supervise commodity distribution, with districting into 20 regions.

Split Tax Payments Due Before July 1

County and state taxpayers who used the split payment plan have four days left to pay the second half of their taxes. Tax collector G. A. Hill warns that starting July 1 an 8 percent penalty and a 6 percent interest rate apply to overdue payments.

Wilson County Encampment Set For July at Sutherland Springs Park

The Wilson County Home Demonstration Council schedules a two day encampment at Sutherland Springs Park on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 and 8. Mrs. Schneider, Three Oaks, and Mrs. R Marsh, Wheless, will lead activities while club members handle food. The finance committee features Mrs. Carol Harper, Sunnyside, Mrs. C. E. Yeager, Poth, and Mrs. H. B. Jackson, Center Point, to oversee expenses.

The National Democratic Convention began in Philadelphia on Tuesday June 23 with speeches by James A Farley and the mood shifting from solemnity to enthusiastic demonstrations. Will Rogers tribute paused proceedings as banners and cheers filled the hall and the crowd awaited Roosevelt’s acceptance speech and Garner’s nominating vice presidential remarks.
