Six CCC Camps To Compete In Field Day At Camp Kleberg

Six CCC camps from Camp Stanley Fort Sam Houston Kenedy Uvalde and Floresville compete in a district field day at Camp Kleberg near Floresville on Saturday June 26. About 150 contestants will register at 8:30 am with Spelling and Plain Writing first at 9 80. Events include literary and educational contests in the morning and field and track events in the afternoon. The program aims to showcase camp morale personality and citizenship with an all around championship and draws attendance from Floresville and Wilson County.

Stockdale Appoints Holleman as New Superintendent

Supt S B Holleman now head of Stockdale schools visited Floresville Monday along with Supt Palm. Holleman, working on his I Degree at Sam Houston Teachers College Huntsville, will assume active duties July 1 after three years as Midway principal and three years teaching in Alabama. He comes to Wilson county highly recommended in education and citizenship.

Luker Named Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Runge

Lloyd Luker, A and I graduate, elected Vocational Agriculture teacher at Runge replacing Tyrus Cox. Luker, longtime agriculture division member at Texas College of A and I, held roles from Aggie Club treasurer to FFA chapter leader, and judged dairy at Fort Worth Fat Stock Show in 1936. He resided in Agriculture Dormitory and led the college dairy herd for three years.

FFA Chapter To Luling Foundation Encampment

Floresville FFA plans a four day encampment starting Tuesday morning June 29 at the Luling Foundation Farm on the San Marcos River in Luling Texas. Attendees will tour the foundation farm and review livestock poultry and crop enterprises with educational sessions and moving pictures. Afternoon activities include swimming fishing and a baseball tournament.

A Port Aransas fishing party from Camp Ranch including Chas Boening Otto Pundt Phillip Roemer and Marvin Orth enjoyed a weekend trip. They saw a tarpon fight a large shark with the shark prevailing. Boening kept a 100 lb shark as a souvenir and Pundt landed a red snapper noted as the first ever off the Port Aransas pier.

State Highway Nail Picker Gets The Job Done

The Texas Highway Department used a magnetic nail picker on Wilson county highways, operated by J. W. Whiteaker. Over five days it cleared debris, weighing 404 pounds across 72 miles, with six miles per hour speed and a reach over the shoulders. Additional county tallies show 1281 pounds in Bexar, 193 in Medina, 300 in Frio, 251 in La Salle, 468 in Atascosa, and 53 in McMullen across 164, 50, 50, 45, 73, and 12 miles respectively.

Floresville Farmer Loses Foot After Long Sickness

F. P. Burton, a Floresville area farmer on the Floresville-Stockdale road, had his left foot amputated at Blake hospital after more than twenty years of trouble from typhoid fever. The operation was successful and he is recovering well. His son Terry Burton of San Antonio, recently operated on, visited him during the past week.

Two-Day Watermelon Jubilee At Stockdale Planned

A two day Watermelon Jubilee is planned in Stockdale for July 2 and 3 featuring daily events each afternoon and street dances every night. An Old Fiddlers Contest and a Queen’s Coronation are slated with multiple towns contributing, along with slow auto races and a parade.

Wilson county leads Southwest Texas watermelons in shipments

Wilson county, a top watermelon area, had shipped 172 carloads by Thursday night with Stockdale at 124 cars and Floresville at 49. Melons weighed 25 to 35 pounds, mostly 27 to 30. Heat slowed arrivals. rain would help later fruit. Growers expect 300 cars from Stockdale and about 100 from Floresville, weather permitting, with local prices 40 to 60 cents per 100 pounds and strong profits if prices hold.
