Floresville Hosts Little and Pony League Start in 4 Town League

A Floresville opening night drew 400 plus as Floresville and Stockdale split a doubleheader. Floresville's Lynn Donaho caught and Emilio Quintanilla pitched while Stockdale's R. Guzman caught and C. Aubin pitched. Floresville collected five hits and five runs with two errors. Stockdale had four hits and two runs. Floresville next hosts Nixon. Stockdale to play a doubleheader in Floresville next Thursday night.

Johnson designates Texas delegation head at convention

The Texas delegation to the Chicago national convention may appoint a leader while Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson cannot remain on the floor. Johnson, as a presidential aspirant, must stay off the convention floor while his name is still in contention. John B. Connally, a close ally and vice chairman of the delegation, is expected to be the likely choice.

Wilson Co Telephone Plan Expands Gillett Dial Service

Wilson County Telephone Company owned by Earl Nunnery outlines a growth plan adding dial phone service to Floresville Path Kosciusko Cestohowa Panna Maria and Gillett. At a Gillett schoolhouse meeting Pete Scheffler said about 400 men signed up to subscribe if installation proceeds with another public gathering planned.

Texas Farm Bureau Queen Contest Rules 1956

The 1956 Texas Farm Bureau Queen contest recognizes farm and ranch girls aged 16 to 22 with at least 25 county members. Counties must hold a district queen contest with two or more entrants. exclusions apply to relatives of officials and past winners. District winners and an attendant travel to the state convention. the state queen and matron escort receive a $500 allowance.

First Melons Moving Here Now From Floresville Area

Floresville ships its first watermelons of the 1956 crop this week under favorable conditions. Joe and Bill Donaho farm 125 acres near Floresville and began pulling ripe melons Tuesday. The Connally brothers irrigate about 140 acres at Picosa, starting shipments yesterday. Allen Franklin begins next Monday from a 90 acre Marcelina field. Other irrigated blocks near Floresville and in Stockdale area plan early shipments as conditions allow.

Falls City invites boys to form Scout Troop 179

New Scout Troop Karnes City Thirty boys aged 11 to 14 and their parents will meet at Falls City School Tuesday at 8 p.m. to organize a Boy Scout Troop sponsored by Falls City Fire Department with J A Benefiel Jr as Scoutmaster. A new Scout movie Once a Scout will be shown. Representatives of Likabee District and Alamo Council will attend. Sutton Drilling Co and J Speer Jr report a new wildcat in Wilson County at 6.5 miles NNE of Stockdale. Location is 330 feet from the road line and 1,350 feet from the northwest line of John Smith Survey 141 A-287. Frank Wilson of San Antonio notes Nos 1 and 2 Houston, No 1 Walker, No 1 Enckevort, and Nos 1 and 2 Higgins as flowing wells in the Kaye Field. No. 6 Higgins fractured and shut in. Nos 3, 4 and 6 Higgins are locations.

Baptist Brotherhood Hosts Notable Guest Speaker at Floresville

The Floresville Baptist Church Baptist Brotherhood hosted the Methodists for a Tuesday night fellowship with a barbecue supper. James Jeffery of Fort Worth, Baylor alumnus and former All-Southwest fullback, headlined the program along with 13 year old Ronnie Rawls. Jeffery spoke on faith, service, and his Christian life, drawing inspiration for fathers and husbands in attendance.

The first major 1956 watermelon shipment from Wilson County arrived in Floresville on Wednesday. John V. Donaho Feed Seed and Grain Company bought the melons, averaging 35 pounds each, of the Black Diamond variety. Shipped in two trailer trucks, the total weight reached 57,170 pounds. The melons were grown by Joe and Bill Donaho on a 125 acre irrigated farm seven miles northeast of Floresville, with about 135 acres in melons under irrigation.

Martha Paxton Fatherée has been selected Queen Melone for the Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee. Crowning set for Thursday evening June 21 with May Roberta Brown as princess and Lillian Pope and Bell Kimbell as duchesses. From Heavy Brush To Growing Crops In Five Months

Connally Bros of Floresville transform a 400 acre Fairview farm from cleared brush to irrigated fields in five months. A 1,200 foot well feeds water to two large reservoirs, irrigating 260 acres of popcorn and 100 acres of melons. Plans call for melon cutting beginning June 1 and planting the rest of the field with peanuts, with irrigation proving crucial during drought. Soil Conservation District Meeting Highlights 4-H Demonstration

The Wilson County Soil Conservation District held a regular session on Thursday June 5 at 9 am. Tommny Walton and Wayne Luker Floresville 4-H Club members presented a four part demonstration on soil fertility mechanical conservation and organic matter. Conservation plans were approved for subdivision No 1 2 and 5 naming local members and supervisors.
