Floresville marks National Trail Day on June 3 at the Hike and Bike Trail with an 8 am kickoff and a daylong program. Activities include an easy walk, music by several acts, author Hugh Hemphill discussing his new book about South Texas railroads, and guided tours from the railroad depot to Lodi sites then to Goliad and Peach streets. Limited edition prints of the Floresville depot by Stephen Hawke will be sold to fund depot restoration. Displays by San Antonio River Authority, Randolph Brooks Credit Union, Floresville Chamber of Commerce, Wilson County EMS, and the Floresville Fire Department accompany the event, sponsored by the Floresville Economic Development Corporation.
Wilson County faces a severe prolonged drought harming over 1,000 agricultural producers. Extension Agent Charles Pfluger notes conditions since last year, with May and June typically rainier yet insufficient. Beef cattle dominate income, ranchers cull herds, and farmers depend on corn sorghum and peanuts amid ongoing dryness. Local reports cite variable rainfall across Floresville Stockdale and Denhawken, with more rain needed to end the drought.
Stephanie Gilchrist and Anne Conn are named FISC elementary teachers of the year for 2006. Gilchrist started at Floresville's early childhood campus in 2001 after graduating from Texas A&M University. She teaches Kinder Photos and related features, reflecting a career rooted in early childhood education and a passion for student learning.
