Alexander Ferguson, reputed as Indiana's oldest man, is noted in local notes for his longevity. The report highlights his age and standing in the community, with emphasis on his long life and local recognition.
Alexander Ferguson aged 116, once called Indiana’s oldest man, died at his two room log cabin home near Gilman. Born in 1788 in Tyrone Ireland he traveled with relatives to America during the War of 1812 and later settled near Anderson before moving closer to Gilman. He never married until age sixty, raised a large family, and survived by a nearly ninety year old wife and several children. He fought a land dispute in Muncie courts to keep his property and was still able to walk until recently. He spoke of Christmases in Ireland a hundred years ago and expressed a wish to be taken by the good Lord.
A Carroll county Republican county convention was held in Delphi on Wednesday drawing a large crowd. The meeting named candidates for local offices including EB Pruitt for Representative, Charles Pegman clerk, Henry Butz treasurer, W F Brown sheriff, Wm Pullen sheriff elect, D E Albaugh surveyor, and Dr McNeal coroner. Delegates Dan Storms and David Sherrick spoke. the gathering was well attended.
The North west Indiana M. E. conference opens in Centenary church Terre Haute with Dr. B P Colvin delivering the sermon. Bishop Earl Cranston presides over the sessions which run to lectures on The Old Testament Prophets by Dr Horswell of the Garrett Biblical Institute and ministerial assignments near the close. Local Rev Fraley attends while Monticello prepares for a Corn Festival and Stock Show October 4 to 8 with premiums listed by secretary A A Douglas. Prosecutor E E Pruitt of Delphi attends circuit court business. postal and rural mail carrier scenes at the St Louis world’s fair mutoscope exhibit draw crowds and show rural life with a collie dog beside a moving wagon as women buy stamps and gossip. The mutoscope displays evoke country life for visitors to the exposition.
John Woodside Gray died Monday morning at his Warren township home. Aged farmer and longtime county resident, he came from Pennsylvania at age four. Survived by wife Nancy Misner and four children plus thirteen grandchildren. Funeral at Geetingsville church, conducted by Revs McCain and Prentice, interment there.
Preparations for the Indiana State Fair next week are advanced and promise an unusually excellent display. The article notes progress in new varieties improved methods and strong exhibitor interest indicating a large attendance. Horner's advertises latest fall hats with no old stock.
