The final 1922 issue notes Saturday will mark the old year’s passing, Sunday the last day, and Monday the first day of 1923. Banks will close for the holiday, post office rural deliveries halt. Business, farm calendars, resolutions, and inventories mark the season as residents ponder what the new year may bring.
The Filer grade team edged Peck's Bad Boys 24 to 22 at the high school gym in a season opener described as evenly matched. Maron Inds, faster and smaller, stayed close as both teams tied at 20 points late in the game. Maron misfired on four free throws in a key stretch while Filer hit two field goals to seal the two point victory.
The third regular PTA meeting will be held Thursday evening January 4 at the grade school building. It will be a social affair with no business. an outside speaker is planned and the remainder of the evening will feature entertainment and refreshments.
A joint informal social evening is planned by two local fraternal groups at 4.0 F. O. F. ball to honor retiring Filer lodge worshipful master J A Johnson and retiring grand patron of the Eastern Star chapter, who are both leaving for new locations near Seattle and Jerome, with dinner, dancing and cards to follow.
Schools end a 16 day break and plan to reopen Tuesday. The semester closes January 19 with the second term starting the following Monday.
A call to residents to spend all possible money in Filer during 1923 to boost business, social life, agriculture, and the local economy. The piece urges buying locally, supporting home trade, and keeping money flowing within the town rather than shopping out of town.
Three Filer representatives elect D L Beamer Janeher and J M Markel with W D Gillis leave for Boise to prepare for the January opening of the seventeenth Idaho legislature. They will return periodically for business, Mrs Beamer and Mrs Gillis plan winter trips, Dan Markel remains Sioux City editor, and G C Davis oversees fairgrounds in their absence.
Both boys and girls teams from the local high school lost to Jerome on its floor Friday. The boys fell 16 to 12 and the girls 20 to 8 as Jerome overcame travel fatigue and limited roster. The local boys next host Kimberly Friday, a rematch after Kimberly’s loss to Twin Falls. The Sneals seek a season comeback in their third game.
Mr and Mrs B B Ripley and their family were honored at a Methodist church community dinner attended by about a hundred friends. The event, organized by the Ladies Aid, honored the Ripleys before their departure for California. Ripley planned to leave soon, with the family driving to California alongside Hammerquist Beem and their son.
Governor elect C. Moore vows a business like administration free of partisanship and to seek counsel from all good citizens. The first appointment disclosed was Idaho Falls editor IL Reed named as the next chief executive’s appointee amid efforts to steady times.
Miss Gertrude Walter won a $250 Lovers phonograph at Modern Drug on Christmas Eve for the closest guess of grains in a wheat bowl on display. Her guess was 180,307. actual grains were 108,268. The prize was delivered to her home by Jrape Hainline and friends. The runners up, Mantix Montgomery and Ralph Conant, are linked to Filer Rural High School.
On Friday evening Cedar Draw community school presented a veantata titled Santa's Success directed by three teachers, Mr and Mrs W C Nazman and Mrs Johnson. The event featured performances by students and showcased holiday cheer.
Secretary of Agriculture Wal lace outlines hopeful outlook for 1923. He notes improved farm prices, higher total income from crops, reduced labor costs, lower interest rates, and growing cooperative marketing. He also cites high freight costs, weather-induced crop shortfalls in some areas, higher local taxes, and ongoing legislative efforts to stabilize agriculture. Strong economic forces and cross-industry cooperation are expected to aid farmers.
Nite carloads of sheep were shipped from Filer yesterday. Seven cars were sent by D. F. Detweller and Levi Hostetler shipped two. They were forwarded to the Chicago market. The Detweller sheep weighed 45 pounds at start and received 45 pounds of feed apiece. There were 1860 dead in this shipment, expected to bring a good market figure.
Weather across Southern Idaho turns mild and rainy as Christmas week ends, with residents surprised by springlike feel. Muddy byways and slushy ground persist after a damp, murky day. Local travelers returning from Los Angeles report the winter here is harsher in other parts, while rain intensifies conditions.
Clark, owner of the only Peavey store, helped fight a night blaze when a heater ignited bedding in a rear bedroom. He suffered minor burns while guiding others to safety and the family jokes about the close call as they plan to buy a new mattress.
Joseph H Gourley of Wooster Ohio sent John H Gourley a gift containing a 80 page bound book titled Text Hook of Pomotogy published in New York. The author Professor Gourlay heads the horticultural department at Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station Wooster and the text covers fruit composition shaping, culture methods, fertilizers climate winter injury storage and preparation for fruit stacks.
Dearig, formerly of Filer, now in Saratoga, Wyoming, where he serves as superintendent, visited friends Tuesday. A past commander of the Imperial Legion post, he previously worked in the Filer highway district office and has been named superintendent of the new consolidated Matte Valley high school. He will lead the forthcoming district, with a substantial salary increase and a new building planned.
Mr. Schooler and two children narrowly escaped injury when a Packard driven by J H Max collided with their buggy on Clear Lakes road Saturday. The horse bolted after the impact, but Mr. Mays freed the occupants and they were unhurt.
Idaho's public utilities commission ruled that Idaho Power's assessed value for determining fair return is 11,035,495 dollars, down from 23,567,800. The decision cuts nearly three million dollars by eliminating non cooperative items and costs of money, disallowing inflated company purchases and debt. The ruling favors the Southern Idaho Power Users' Association which intervened to curb a general rate increase. The commission action accompanies a formal order dated January 22 guiding opening hearings based on the new valuation.
Miler celebrated Christmas at home with family dinners over Sunday and Monday. Many households hosted meals featuring turkey, goose, duck and chicken with all trimmings. Churches held services drawing large crowds while post offices and malls saw heavy activity. Merchants reported solid holiday trade including a carload of Christmas trees from Buhl and Twin Falls. Weather was wet and dark, not the usual white Yuletide.
A verdict for 15200 was awarded to Nathan Hayhurst against Boyd hospital. The case claimed the nerve left the plaintiff in a chair with the window up while recovering from typhoid fever caused complications. An appeal to the supreme court will be taken, per attorney A Walters for the hospital company.
