New York press recounts the June Talcahuano incident when Chilean submarine H3S suffered a flooded battery and poisonous fumes. Crew remained disciplined in darkness as pumps worked. rescue teams above, including cranes and divers, located the sub and established communication, preserving life onboard.
The Chilean submarine L-3, numbered 1-12 in the English navy, suffered a catastrophic accident after a battery tank failure. Rescue efforts saved many crew members though two remained at their posts until death or exhaustion. Morse signaling from the hull aided rescuers as the stern finally broke surface and hatch opened revealing exhausted survivors.
A rare monkeyfaced owl was captured by Darbyshire Foundry workers in a scrap iron pile near El Paso Texas. The bird was taken to the city zoo at Washington Park where keeper Robert Smid supervised the transfer.
