Taft, Mrs. Taft and Fred Carpenter depart Cincinnati for Hot Springs for rest till Thanksgiving. Wilbur Wright honored by Aero Club of France with gold medal and academy medal. Charles W. Elliot resigns as Harvard president effective May 19, 1909. Dowager empress of China celebrated at Amoy on the fleet visit anniversary.
A letter from President Roosevelt replies to cor respondents on Judge Taft s religious beliefs and rebukes bigotry. The National Conservation of Resources commission invites governors to a December 8 Washington meeting. Also reported are a New York hotel death, a murder life sentence in Indiana, a Boston marriage, a Brooklyn burglary, a Bosnian siege death toll, river drowning, German ambassador appointment, antitrust ruling on American Tobacco, Cuban widow pension, and various fires and crimes.
Reports span a Benton Illinois mine shaft disaster entombing four men to political expenses of vice president elect Sherman. Fleet movements, ship sinkings, bank receiverships, murders, fires, earthquakes, and legal actions mix in a broad 1900 era roundup of incidents with named places and people.
At Morgan town in Martinsville Indiana a major blaze caused extensive damage with Cornelius Lawrence livery barn and 15 horses at 5 000 loss with 1800 insured Crawford hardware 2500 no insurance Bert Whittaker grocery 1000 none Enos Kelso furniture building 2500 stock 1500 insured small on building none on stock James Lake shoe shop 200 meat shop and John Lock barn 500 none. Fire origin unknown and started in the Lawrence livery barn.
Albert Roubick testified he murdered Emil Kresnicka the Chicago jeweler due to infatuation with Kresnicka's wife. The jury sentenced him to life imprisonment and he said he hoped for the death penalty and that he would be taken to Michigan City prison after the sentence.
Logansport judge Daniel P Baldwin and Kentland lawyer William H Dague were indicted by Newton county grand jury on two counts each for embezzlement tied to the Goodland bank, closed by State Auditor Billheimer last year. Baldwin posted $500 bonds on both indictments.
Danville Indiana reports a historic win as John W. Ader defeats Republican John Robbins for sheriff by 162 votes. Ader, a wealthy stock dealer, becomes the first Democratic officer in Hendricks county in over six decades.
John Wilson, a motor man, was killed and Mrs. Edgar Austin was seriously hurt when a South Bend Limited traction car was struck from the track by a Lake Erie and Western passenger train backing toward Laporte. Four dozen riders suffered cuts and bruises as the two trains collided near the city. Conductor Lehrman blamed the accident on the passenger train's lack of rear lighting and brakeman, claiming he signaled but was unseen.
An interurban car on the Chicago South Bend and Northern Indiana Railway was struck by a northbound Lake Erie passenger train at 5:30 p m. The motor end of the coach wrecked and passengers were badly shaken. Motorman John Wilson was trapped in wreckage and fatally injured. The trolley jumped the wire in darkness preventing the other train from stopping in time.
Company C of the First Indiana National Guard offers a sham battle for Thanksgiving at Glenwood Park in New Albany. The event proceeds go to Consolidated Charities treasury after gate receipts are collected.
Early returns indicate Charles B. Landis of the Ninth district defeated in Indiana. Ralph Moss of the Fifth district wins as a Democrat. Henry A. Earnhardt of the Thirteenth district is elected with about a 500 vote plurality. Charles W. Miller, Republican, was initially reported successful.
Henry Stock, a house democratic precinct committeeman, tried to shoot Belle Dede after a night of dispute over local results. Belle Dede disarmed him and fatally shot Stock. In Madison, Walter Farrell, a saloon porter, opened fire with a rifle wounding two glassblowers, Alexander Cloud and Edward Riley, in Jefferson County. True To the Past notes election results with Culbertson as representative. The Republican county ticket held, with Taft and Watson winning in county. only one of ten township trustees elected, Capt. Chas. H. Suppice chosen for Madison township.
In Wabash Indiana a high school strike followed expulsions for flying sophomore colors on the courthouse staff. The marching students led by a military band refused to return until the six suspensions are lifted.
Herman Bothmer died suddenly in Brookville Indiana after a long career as telegraph editor of the West Hehe Post of St Louis. He retired due to ill health and lived in Brookville. A widow survives him.
Mrs Lenora Bodenhamer of Kernersville North Carolina writes of long stomach trouble indigestion and nervous unease. She credits Peruna and Manalin after Dr Hartman diagnosed catarrh of the stomach and says she now feels well. She urges others with similar symptoms to try Peruna.
