National 21 Year Old Registration Ordered by War Secretary

The War Secretary announces the June 5 1918 registration for all men turning 21 since June 5 1917 with Crowder's office coordinating through local boards. Estimates suggest over 1 000 000 registrants and 75 000 available for service, with exemptions for active service and specific student categories. Divinity and medical students must register though some are exempt from draft after registration. Registrants must appear in person at their local board between 7 am and 9 pm on June 5 1918 and obtain a registration card.

Aged bachelor dies after short illness

Bernard Werb aged 76 years 10 months 14 days died at his home southeast of town Monday morning at 9 30 after a few weeks illness from a decayed tooth infection. He was born in Bayern Germany came to the United States at age twelve settling in Ferdinand. He never married and leaves his sister's daughter as the only near relative. Sister M Agatha first Mother Superior of the Convent of the Immaculate Conception was Werb's sister. Interment was Wednesday after a requiem mass at 7 30. May he rest in peace.

The Jasper boys Otto Durlauf Roy Birge Math Kapp Fred Heather Clarence Dasch Louis Henke Joseph Borho and Fred M Sturm leave today to enter the navy. A June 5 registration deadline is set with penalties for delinquency. guidance is given for those away or ill and where to register depending on residence.

Boys Report For Training Camp In War Time

Thirty one youths reported for military duty at five o clock Thursday and were escorted to the Indiana Hotel for a banquet. Friday they marched to the depot with the 1ster Band and left for Columbus Ohio. On Monday forty seven assembled in Jasper for duty and later proceeded by train to Camp Taylor.

Publicity to Be Given All Slackers in County

At a May 27 meeting of the County Defense Council in Ferdinand Indiana the decision was made to publicize all slackers those who refuse to support war relief drives and bonds including Red Cross Y M C A K C and Liberty Loan efforts. Ben Denning Dies at Evansville

Ben Denning of Evanville died Monday after an appendectomy. He was 43 and leaves three daughters and one son, his mother, two brothers, and three sisters. He was taken to St Meinrad, his former home, and burial was set for 8:30 this morning in St Meinrad cemetery. Our sympathy goes to the bereaved.

Goepfrich Sentenced For Axattack Near Dale

Joseph Goepfrich a farmer near Dale was found guilty by the Warrick circuit court at Boonville of assaulting Donald J. Wallace with an ax. He received a sentence of two to fourteen years in the state prison after the trial and a bond was set for his appearance on a new trial request. Prosecutor Robert Armstrong condemned defense counsel, while Goepfrich, born near Ferdinand, has several siblings in the area.
