The NEWS announces an Employment Bureau style register for volunteers to aid farmers. Anyone may enlist, with the farmer selecting workers from a listed pool. Registration opens tomorrow June 8 as a community effort to share labor and support local agriculture.
German alien females must register from June 17 to June 26 in cities over 5,000 population by police. smaller communities use Postmasters. Each registrant will have fingerprints recorded, a method also used in U.S. military and naval services.
The Dubois County men aged 21 and older since June Sth last year went to Jasper for registration. One hundred sixty three applicants answered questions in full and received a red carnation from the ladies. Additional cards from Ferdinand boys in military service report both men safe "Over There." Born to Mr and Mrs Ed Schipp a boy arrives Wednesday night.
The June term of the Dubois Circuit Court opened with the grand and petit juries drawn but unlikely to be called due to Judge Bretz’s illness. Temporary judge Bomar Traylor presided as cases were reviewed and the docket read. Several trials and future sessions were listed including cases involving theft, divorce, assault, and notes.
A wartime notice lists 137 occupations with high demand in the War Department. It notes shortages in mule handling, blacksmiths, butchers, cooks, and rank-and-file engineers, with strong needs for mechanics and interpreters. Applications for commissions as Army chaplains exceed needs while excess figures run into thousands. Clerks remain plentiful but specialists are in demand.
The Honor Flag for Ferdinand township, awarded for over-subscription to the Third Liberty Loan, was received last Friday and is shown in the front window of R. J. Beckmann's residence.
A white river catfish weighing fifty six pounds was caught last Saturday by Louis Joseph Charles and Robert Egg of Jasper. They used a trot line at High Rock three miles west of Porteraville. The fish measured eleven inches in diameter four feet long with a head circumference of two feet two inches and a nine inch mouth. Its top fin spread six and a half inches and stood five inches high while the tail fanned fourteen inches. The Egg brothers dressed the fish Saturday night and served it Sunday.
A petition by Elizabeth Kippenbrock and others sought a board order to change drainage along her highway frontage. Trustees argued only the township trustee could decide. the Board of Commissioners agreed and dismissed the petition. Representing petitioners were R W Armstrong and Bomar Traylor represented Trustee Senninger.

The Dubois County Commissioners met June 3 for their regular monthly session. They adjusted some expenses including meals, approved claims for township assessors, and granted a request to erect a 100 foot flagstaff and purchase a U S flag for July 4 celebrations. Bridges were noted as needing repairs, bond for John W. Klosterman as assistant rock road superintendent was accepted, and several road reports and a sanitary condition report for the Poor Farm were reviewed. All liquor licenses were continued.
A rural gathering on R. R. 2 featured a poultry pulling contest at John B. Wandholt’s country home in honor of the St. Henry Pig and Poultry Club drawing a large crowd. Prof Hemmer of Holland gave a hog talk while John Heilman explained how to weed out boarders and keep the laying hen.
John Schaefer died at his home in St. Anthony on Tuesday morning after a cancer illness. He was 66 years 11 months and 20 days old. Survived by three daughters Katherine Hedinger Rose Cmmissar and Bertha Schaefer four sons John George Joseph and Basil Schaefer one brother George and a sister Mrs Fred Albert of Ferdinand. Interment was held at St. Anthony yesterday morning.
A World War I era collection shows letters from Karl Olinger at Camp Zachary Taylor May 31 1918 mentioning quarantine shots rough but fun arrival of thousands of rookies etc and a separate note from Camp Upton May 24 1918 to Mr and Mrs Robert Roth describing drafted fellows drilling weather and camp details with names such as Herman Seng and mentions of Camp Taylor and 11 hundred soldiers in the company.
