Public notice urges timely filing for the 1918 income tax under the new Revenue law. It details who must file by March 15, required net incomes, deduction rules, credits, and how to compute tax using Form 1040 A and 1040 for higher incomes, with guidance from internal revenue collectors in Indiana.
In a February 8 1919 letter from Vernie France a service member writes to Miss Emma Seufert recounting his experiences in the Hindenburg line near St Quentin and Cambrai. He describes the St Quentin canal tunnel calm and brutal fighting including heavy German defenses and casualty figures from the 30th division.
Private Laula Reckelhoff describes injuries from shellfire in France, surviving with a blue-badged leg and shoulder wounds, cold weather, scarce rations, and longing to return home. He lists battles and division history, notes two months pay, and plans for travel toward the U.S. He closes with recollections of home and a baptism of faith.
Louis Reckelhoff writes from Baumbach Germany dated February 4 1919 describing weather conditions and daily life while serving abroad. The letter mentions hard fighting and camaraderie with references to correspondence with Slater and personal well being.
The town board met at the school building and merged marshal and street commissioner into one post. Frank Drach was appointed with a daily salary for days he works and must report at each meeting. A citizen committee urged no more public spending on the Fred Michel site and proposed property owner funded grade improvements. No action was taken.
John Theis and Ed Egloff announce a public sale on March 12 1919 starting 12 30 PM. Items include household and kitchen furniture farming implements and tools plus two acres with six room house barn and outbuildings in good condition. Also notes of newborn Nicholas Martin with sponsors Martin Weyer and Miss Augusta Leinenbach. The sale is at Theis place.
Henry Timmermann arrived home Thursday night after honorable discharge from fourteen months service in France Belgium and Alsace with the gas and flame division. He carried his gas mask and helmet as souvenirs and spoke of Brest and Alsace before the armistice. Leo Ernst passed through on his way home to Adgeville after discharge. Karl Olinger arrived in the U S awaiting discharge. Hugo G Jocham, stationed at Camp McClellan, reached St Henry after seven months service and discharge.
The February FERDINAND NEWS notes add names to a growing list. George Dumolt and John Skrynecke from St Meinrad. M A Sweeney and Henry Brockmann from Jasper. Angon Schwartz RB BR. Ott Keckelhow Wantingburg. Alvin Hoffmann Lowell. Emil Mullis and Andrew Becher from New Vienna.
Minnie Diers aged a8 died at Hantingburg from influenza illness. Funeral in St Henry Cemetery officiated by Rev Meinrad Tool with the Memoriam by editor E W Pickhardt of ?-burg. The note recalls Corporal Bertram Ph who was killed in action 1918 and contains tributes from service days.
