In a separate Iowa incident at Cedar Rapids eight children from the Sweeting family and Clara Usher drown while wading near a riverbank. Ruth Kiersey survives after alerting others. The Sweeting children ranged from 7 to 14 years old and lived near Ellis Park.
Dispatch from Sevastopol reports the assassin of Admiral Chouk Nin, commander of the Black Sea fleet, was a girl disguised in a soldier’s uniform. No arrest has yet been made.
John McPherson, 24, fled after killing Grant Smith a Knoxville former merchant and fatally wounding Deputy Sheriff William Walker during an attempted arrest. Two posses pursue him, Smith died in Nettie Hall’s house after an apparent unprovoked shooting.
Robbers robbed the Glen Bernie Maryland post office a small railroad station of about $1000 on Sunday night. They knocked the acting postmaster Adam Wingert senseless bound and gagged him before escaping. Police have no lead on the robbers.
An explosion in the McLaughlin stone quarries at Bellwood near Chicago wrecked a shanty leaving three men blown to pieces and several others fatally or badly injured. Authorities cite possible foul play as a contributing factor to the blast.
In the Virginia Carolina Chemical Company case Judge Goff denied the writ of habeas corpus in Richmond Virginia upholding Judge Waddill. The Virginia defendants were remanded to marshal custody while the Tennessee jurisdiction for trial is held as the indictments were filed there. Notice of appeal to the U S Supreme Court was given.
Attorney General Moody believes the federal grand jury in Cleveland has secured evidence to bring Standard Oil to its knees. The claim follows testimony already submitted to the grand jury.
Columbus Georgia shippers plan to secure lower freight rates by patronizing the all water route via Apalachicola. A special Columbus board of trade committee reviewed the water route and reached a practically unanimous opinion that a water transportation path should be established despite possible delays and inconveniences.
Sheriff Wilson of Clay County Florida was shot and killed during an attempted arrest of a Black suspect Tuesday afternoon. A deputy shooter also killed the suspect. the county reels in the wake of the tragedy.
