Hagerman states no sudden changes in Santa Fe administration. He vows careful study of offices before curtailing expenses and urges abolition of tireless offices and needless expenditures. He praises Governor Otero, notes high territorial taxes, and addresses public lands issues and inquiries from a few applicants.
The Durnavee Herald reports a landmark sale in Orange and nearby regions as the Porter Buel Co holdings transfer to the Southern Pacific railroad. The deal, valued at around a million dollars, includes extensive coal lands across La Plata and San Juan counties, signaling rapid progress on a Durango line and new holdings for the purchaser. Jo A Porter and John McNeil traveled to Denver amid details guarded by officials.
The valleys and mesas along the Animas, San Juan, and La Plata rivers hold vast, fertile territory. Falls along the rivers enable canal and ditch irrigation to transform arid plains into productive farms. With railroads opening markets, unused lands are rapidly being cultivated and values rising.

The Indian mine near the river is being opened and upgraded by Harry Evans. The coal vein extends sixty miles south and averages 18 feet thick, with seven feet currently mined. Indians once carried coal to the mesa. an overseer now supervises a new access road. Coal supports Indian benefit and local development, alongside deposits of dime, iron ore, elaterite, building stone, and high quality clay in Fruitland.
