In Grampion office a man paid for a five line local ad to announce a tan colored bill-book lost by J L Townley containing $35. Townley later identified it when O H Putney produced the book found north of Hoopers road. Townley refused any pay for Putney's trouble. ad cost 25 cents returned as $35 value.
The Elgin district resumes after four months break with teachers J. A. Willhite Miss Cora Ray and Blanche Calyer leading the year. Pupils ready to work as the public schools reopen next Monday morning though no bell rings. Parents are urged to consult teachers for any questions about the new year.
Washington approval lets Carrier E. H. Kickley use an automobile on route 1 to serve patrons starting October 1. Schedule shows depart 8 30 a m return 12 30 p m with fallback inmate duty 8 80 to 4 30 when car not available.
T. Ryan secures first on cock and pullet prizes and first on best pen of five at the state poultry exhibit. Elgin earns notice in the poultry map as he exhibits fine birds, including a Barred Rock cock sold for $40 at the fair.
At the Epworth League meeting on Sunday evening a winter reading circle was decided. The first meeting is next Tuesday evening Oct. 6 at 7 30 at the home of H P Wettengel. All are invited and refreshments will be served. Attendees will hear items of interest discussed.
The two year old child of C EB Gibson and wife who was reported last week as having badly burned feet died Friday morning from the injuries. The wound affected the heart and physicians noted a pulse near 175 before death, though some experts doubt a pulse above 150 is measurable.
The Elgin cotton warehouse is nearly finished with final work largely completed except for remaining tasks on the roof. Workers have completed the main structure and exterior, while roof installation and finishing touches remain.

Shannon Wahnie is noted as arrested on a charge tied to securing money under false pretenses, with the matter settled out of court. The issue lists letters advertised free, bearing cancellation marks from June July and August 1914.
Elgin residents faced grazing trespass as three horses roamed yards and drank water. W F Wolcott saw a Lawton ad detailing the exact horses and offered a $25 reward. The animals strayed from a Rock Island camp meeting near the four mile crossing, owned by Regis Alsentoyah of Apache.

We Wit Win Won Roy Willians Big Time Sunday. A grand time is anticipated at the singing convention in Elgin next Sunday with Prof. H. A. Duncan and a male quartet from Cotton county. The event begins early to allow distant attendees, Methodist Sunday school at 9 30 with a noon dinner, and many baskets expected. The meeting will be held in the Baptist church to provide more seating.
A late night pursuit tracked a suspect for four miles before locating a boat and tying the trail to a person named Sareen. James Eads and a companion reported the pursuit after a trail line led them to the country road when the incident occurred near Hendrien.
Farmers near Elgin skip selling cotton to fund state fair travel, instead picking as much as they can themselves. The cotton market weakness reduces passes to the fair, leaving farmers to rely on harvest labor and local means.
A local Elgin merchant said this week that Saturday drew the best business of the fall season, noting strong sales and a robust dollard on Lawton street as shoppers hit the shops.
