Pellagra, a recently identified disease, has caused multiple deaths in the state. Health officials note skin and mental deterioration, with alcohol intake and poor living conditions cited as risk factors. Scientists remain uncertain about causes and cures, urging overall health improvements.
Dr. Chas W Joyce and his family have returned from the east Sunda region following several weeks away. Joyce engaged in hospital work in New York and Baltimore during part of the period while the family spent the summer with relatives in North Carolina.
Cool weather continues after Saturday rain with hints of a cold winter. A large Sunday school crowd gathered and photos were taken. G W Wade’s family visited Todfrey Webber and shared baked turkey. Threshing resumes. rain may hinder it. Rain damaged hay and wheat in the valley. Folks still canning fruits and vegetables. Some Mt Scott residents plan to attend a supper on Thursday and Friday. Wade to add cow sheds. six calves sold to Emmet Gray. Allen Gremory and wife shopped in Elgin. Swing and wife visited John Hoberger.
Mt View fell to Elgin 11 to 7 after seven innings with a late eighth inning rally by the visitors producing 11 runs before the game was halted by an accident. Poor prep and missing Elgin players due to the hurried matchup affected both sides and drew a sizable crowd.
Rural social notes from Apache and Elgin report visitors including Pearl Froas and wife Deborah Morris with children visiting J. B. Thralls north of Elgin, and ice cream supper at E. Gibson home hindered by rain. Attendees included Geo Dernott, Leslie Head, Velva Head, Ollie, Beatrice, Maggie Williamson, Clifford Love, and Dennard Albright. Marie and Raphael Morris attended Av Helen Bevans birthday dinner in Apache celebrating her thirteenth birthday with friends departing late.
Elgin defeated Mt View with seven to two as a foul line collision injured J A Price who recovered and returned home the next day. lineup included Compton Kernoodle Prymart Studyvin and Sorrels. umpires Walling Jenkins and scorekeeper Wettengel. Local residents visited relatives and enjoyed a boat ride on Cache creek amid social notes.
The revival begins Saturday evening at the Elgin Baptist Church led by the pastor with a singer assisting. The event is set to draw local congregants to an evening of worship and singing.
Postmaster H P Werrenest notes unclaimed letters dated September 1 1916. Names include Miss May Smith and Paul Woodward. Patrons are instructed to say Advertised when calling for these items.
Exam for postal mate position called for Monday September 28 in Lawton. The notice lists candidate names and requires bring required documents. Eligible applicants should report to the Sterling examination center at the specified date and time.
Will Jones and Miss Ila Burch, residents east of Elgin, wed Thursday evening in Oklahoma City by a local judge. The couple planned a Monday ceremony elsewhere but were married in the city during a short visit by Miss Burch. They will establish housekeeping on the Burch farm as the parents plan to move to Fletcher for schooling.
Next Monday is a legal holiday and rural carriers will not operate that day. The Elgin post office will be closed all day except for one hour after the west bound afternoon train arrives. Buy stamps money orders and other necessities on Saturday.
An adjuster for the Home Insurance Co. settled the damages to W. C. Hunt’s barn southeast of town after a recent storm. The property is insured with agent H. P. Wettengel.
The post office announces new insuring fees for parcel services effective September 1. Rates: up to $5 value three cents. up to $25 five cents. up to $50 ten cents. up to $100 twelve cents. Registered mail adds two cents per ounce and ten cents for registration.
Tom Kimbro of Anadarko a traveling salesman for Dawson Scheuler Produce Co Chickasha died by his own hand Monday of last week after returning from a regular trip He left two notes one to his wife and another to employers outlining a debt of 486 dollars He had worked for the company over nine years.
