Cement town votes on extra mill levy for four month term

Cement residents approved a 4 mill levy to fund a shortened school term of four months. A depot burglary last week saw all the alcohol stolen. Tillman county in July recorded 11 deaths and 52 births split 29 girls and 23 boys. The state board of equalization raised Tillman county assessed valuation by 1.2 million. Snyder is noted as Frisco's southwest center with four morning and three afternoon Frisco trains meeting there. Baptist revival at Stecker opened and reported 79 conversions by midweek. Apache schools set to open Sept 7. Cement Courrier notes 125 to 150 carloads of watermelons shipped locally this year, with most in three weeks from July 30 to Aug 20, averaging over $100 per load.

School Election on Sept 1 for 1 mill levy addition

A school election will be held at the Elgin school building next Tuesday afternoon, Sept 1, to vote on adding one mill to the district tax levy in addition to the county 6 mills. The extra tax is described as for the benefit of schools and the community, noting Fletcher Poe had added five mills last year.

Henry P Hansen obituary notes long life and family ties

Henry P. Hansen of two miles west of Elgin died at home Friday morning after months of decline caused by dropsy. Funeral at his residence Sunday at 3 pm conducted by Rev. D. Hinckley. burial in family grounds. Survived by nine children and his wife, who died in 1907. He served in the Civil War, was born in 1844 in Magdenburg Prussia, and lived in Michigan Illinois and Texas before settling in Elgin Oklahoma.

A Frisco special train of four cars moved east through Elgin on Thursday forenoon as road officers completed a general inspection run from St. Louis to Quanah Texas.

Doctor’s Gun Threat Sparks Ford Fletcher Road Incident

Thursday Dr Joyce of Fletcher confronted a moving man south of Fletcher with a gun drawn amid a tangle on the road. The mover, with a wife and four children, ordered the doctor to pull aside, but the physician drove to town and had him arrested. The hearing was set for Friday, but the mover fled Thursday night.

New Postmaster Appointed in Elgin

On August 21 H P Wetten gel was named postmaster of Elgin after a civil service examination. He achieved the highest grade, 3.4 percent above the next competitor, securing the appointment.

First Cotton Bales Reported Across Oklahoma Counties

Cotton prospects around Elgin and southwestern Oklahoma are described as never better. First bale sales occurred in Jefferson county at Waurika with ten cents per pound to the buyer, Waurika National Bank. Mangum reported a first bale on Thursday, Frederick on Friday, and Temple on Tuesday last week at eight cents per pound. Merchants in Mangum planned a $100 purse for the ten men delivering the first ten bales.

The fourth annual Iowa picnic will be held next Wednesday September 2 at Cache Creek on the county line between Caddo and Comanche counties. All former Iowa residents are invited to attend and to bring any other Iowans now living in or from Iowa.

Rainstorm Swamps County with Flooding and Animal Loss

The heaviest rain in town in memory fell Tuesday from early morning to evening, estimated four to six inches. Water overflowed the steel bridge near the C. W. area, washing away hogs and chickens. Surrounding areas saw only light showers and six miles south remained dry.
