The American battleship fleet nears Melbourne on August 24 after a long voyage from Sydney. The ships will enter the harbor to a lasting ovation for the sailors with a seven day stay. Officials from federal and state governments will greet the visitors and festivities proceed.
A hobo discovers a two feet broken rail two miles east of Watertown on the Minneapolis and St Louis line delaying a night passenger run bound for the Twin Cities. Crews spike and pass safely. The following evening a second broken rail is spotted eight miles south of town by harvest workers, averting another derailment.
State Bank of Athens in Athens Calhoun county closed its doors this afternoon officials reported a deliberate plan to deceive the state banking department since an examination on March 10 1908. The notice cited I F Wallace as president and H G Lewis as cashier and cited banking commissioner Zimmerman. A separate item from Bessemer Michigan warned John Beovarda of Black Hand threats demanding $1000 or his family would be harmed and a potential white slave implication.
Capt Hains of the U S Army and his brother T Jenkins Hains were arraigned in Long Island City on murder charges. The captain allegedly shot William A in Bay Side L I and T Jenkins, a magazine writer, is charged as an accessory for detaining spectators during the killing.
Two life term prisoners escaped from the Eastern Penitentiary in Philadelphia amid an unknown state of unrest among about 1,400 inmates. Authorities pursued possible leads as the incident unfolded on August 28.
Boston August 23 two hundred steerage passengers from the White Star liner Romanic were held for examination at the quarantine station to prevent possible entry of bubonic plague. Dr Paul Carson the local quarantine physician was notified of the Azores outbreak on the vessel. Meanwhile in Great Falls Montana Sons of Hermann gathered for the state convention running through tomorrow.
Wahpeton North Dakota on Tuesday morning five year old Sophia Schmidt died after taking whisky from a bottle left on a table by her mother who had dosed her stomach earlier. Despite efforts by Dr O'Brien the child never regained consciousness.
Chas B Roberts financier and clubman of Baltimore was shot and revived enough to tell police he will recover. Investigations focus on a Ming suspect as authorities press for clues. Mrs Williams in a rolling chair and the chair pusher were cross examined with consistent stories. Campaign ads advise on newspaper advertising rates.
Fargo postoffice reports a letter to Mrs N A Kandel in Cass County with no street address. Any person knowing the recipient's correct post office should notify the Fargo office to forward or locate her.
Hongkong August 28 nearly one million dollars has been raised to aid flood victims. Subscriptions poured in worldwide and Chinese responders joined the relief effort. A fundraising drive modeled on American lines opened in Hongkong with high ticket prices.
Trinidad California reports Dan Wenger and two children drowned in floods near Folsom. A local undertaker received orders for coffins for the drowned. Additional victims named include T Wheeler and wife whose bodies were found buried in sand.
Augusta Georgia and surrounding areas report widespread flood damage. At 10 30 this morning Central Grammar School collapsed and a National Biscuit Co building's siding failed. Royal Bridge underpinning washed away. A mass meeting of citizens is planned this afternoon with no further loss of life reported.
Fayetteville North Carolina with 12000 residents on the Cape Fear river was largely submerged by last night's and this morning's high water. About three thousand people are reported homeless in the city and an appeal for relief has been issued.
The report from Atlanta notes widespread flood damage across Georgia South Carolina and North Carolina with estimated deaths at thirty and missing persons feared. Authorities warn bridges and rail lines are down cutting communications through the region and relief efforts are under way including aid requests for loans to relieve affected families.
Monroe New York August 28 Ferd P Earle and his wife reconciled after his release on $1 000 bail from Goshen jail for beating his wife who had just given birth. She returned from New York holding their three week old baby and appeared glad to reunite.
Copenhagen reports a shell premature explosion during target practice at Arhus bay on the Hekla causing two deaths and six serious injuries among crew. The casualty list also includes a separate note of a young Italian, 22, who died after being injured in an underground accident.
Former U S Senator William F Vilas of Wisconsin dies from a cerebral hemorrhage. He served as postmaster general and interior secretary in Cleveland's first administration and was a key aide and senator in the second. Born Chelsea July 9 1840 he practiced law in Madison after the Civil War, rising to prominence as a jurist and orator. Continues on Page Six.
Inquiry into the Milwaukees soldiers home reveals a leper, John E Early, was isolated and the war department removed him from the home. Officials say the leper is being cared for, and no colony will be started for leprosy patients. The incident involves a Private O Gorman and the First Infantry unit from Porto Rico.
Invitations have been issued for the ninth annual graduation exercises at St John’s training school for nurses. The event occurs at 8 20 pm Friday September 4 in the Cathedral club auditorium. The two graduates are Miss Bertha Johnson and Miss Julia Newton. A strong program is planned. A local farmer from Argusville reports fifty six nearby farmers pledged to hold wheat at one dollar per bushel and not sell for less. Almost all state farmers join the Equity Society in pressing for the price. The group aims to lift the wheat price to one dollar before winter.
In Oklahoma a long running feud culminated when David and William Webb attacked J. W. Culpepper’s west side grocery. Culpepper fired his shotgun, fatally wounding David and mortally wounding William, before he was stabbed by William Webb. Culpepper is seriously injured.
John Tulkken, a Finlander who arrived from Oriska about two weeks ago, died at the county hospital last evening from typhoid fever after a short critical illness. He had been suffering for a couple of weeks.
Rio Janeiro reports the British steamer Dunes'n sank during a typhoon on August 26 off Goto Port. Only two of 53 crew survived, engineer William Phillips and seaman John Landon, rescued by the Japanese steamer Sakio Maru.
William Johnson was arrested this morning by Officer Dan Costello at the Northern Pacific yards, charged with indecent exposure and peering into sleeping car windows. Railroad officials believe he is deranged, having been dismissed from service about a year ago for similar acts. His case will be heard by Judge Ryan this afternoon.
Atlantic City August 28 The extraordinary situation follows Governor Forts proclamation to use the state militia to enforce Sunday liquor laws and the Atlantic county grand jury ignoring court instructions by not indicting violators of excise laws. The outcome of potential militia deployment remains a leading topic as summer ends.
Judge C A Pollock issued a decree of divorce to Mrs May Pearl Hauft from Carl J Mautt after finding cruel and inhuman treatment. The divorce was granted amid allegations of vile language in public and private. Hauft once ran a Fargo boarding house and previously divorced Joe Lemieux, aka Bench Jor, two years ago. Haut, a horse trainer and cowboy, reportedly traveled with a wild west show.
The case against James Wood hinges on Lizzie Hoyum’s age. The girl testified she is fifteen, but her father Andrew Hoyum could not confirm exact age. The mother’s testimony is needed, with the trial postponed to allow her arrival. the girl, from Parke township, Minnesota, came to Fargo alone.
A. E. Bestie has secured a prime Thirteenth Street South lot from Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Magill for a new residence. The 200 by 7 foot parcel lies immediately south of Col. John D. Heston's properties and is described as one of the most desirable in the city.
