Prominent New York lawyers say Harry Thaw could be freed within a month. Eugene Philbin notes Thaw might gain freedom outside New York by habeas corpus, since his commitment at Matteawan is a New York matter only. If federal authorities seek his appearance in Pittsburgh bankruptcy proceedings, the issue could hinge on state versus federal custody.
W R Stubbs of Lawrence as Square-deal candidate wins the Kansas Republican nomination for governor by a landslide over Cyrus Leland. J N Dooley served as Stubbs' manager and aided the victory. Wyandotte county delivered a stinging blow for Leland with about 6 000 votes of 16 000 possible.
Brief dispatch from St Paul notes a hold up on a westbound Northern Pacific passenger train east of Spokane at 10 40 last night. Robbers boarded at Rathdrum hid aboard the train forced the crew to disconnect engine and mail car and then rifled the mail car. No injuries reported and amount of booty not disclosed.
The Ohio senatorial contest grows complex as Foraker and Dick carry rival stances amid Taft campaigns. Foraker's term ends March 3, 1908 after twelve years, Dick's ends March 3, 1911 after seven. Cleveland reports Republican leaders awaiting decisive action as the fight continues.
Lawyers argue Thaw could be released if held outside New York. A U.S. marshal would transport him to Pittsburg, then New Jersey, where he would be free unless New York courts obtain him. McIntyre notes insanity in one state does not prove insanity elsewhere.
Mrs Mary Wright of Derrick was arrested on a murder charge in the death of her adopted daughter Babe Wright sixteen. Neighbors report bitter quarrels and authorities say poison may have followed the return home. Wright held without bail in Devils Lake jail with a Monday hearing scheduled at two o clock.

In Boston on August 15 the supreme assembly of the uniformed rank of the Knights of Pythias voted to hold the next convention in Milwaukee. The tally shows Milwaukee 87 Richmond 23 Colorado Springs 22 Mackinac Island 65.
In Murray Kentucky on August 15 the jury in the Jacob Hillis night rider trial was discharged after failing to reach a verdict. The foreman said eight jurors favored acquittal and four favored conviction.
The United States court of appeals in St. Louis ruled against plaintiffs in a long running case over $27,229,000 in Union Pacific bonds. Defendants included George Gould EB Harriman Chauncey Depew and other notables. Court called the action a fraud and noted evidence of defrauding others of $50,000.
New York dispatch reports Enrico Caruso the famous tenor has received word that his wife eloped to England with a young friend of the singer. The woman allegedly took jewels and a large sum from his safe, and Caruso expressed willingness to forgive and welcome her back if she returns penitent.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen of the CP Rail asks the Dominion government to appoint an arbitration board. They allege an engine man on the Lake Superior division was unjustly dismissed for union activity. Twenty more Japanese workers arrived to join CP shops as another Crow's Nest Pass gang departed.

Vivian Burden, 12, died after swallowing carbolic acid. Officials believe the death of May Williamson, 16, a schoolmate and friend, influenced Burden to take her own life.

Rumors of martial law threaten as authorities prepare to act to quell the violence surrounding Lincoln’s old homestead and state capitol.
Chicago August 15. The First Infantry Illinois National Guard was ordered to proceed immediately to Springfield to assist in preserving the peace of that city. The call to arms was promulgated by Colonel Sanborn and a telegram sent to Governor Deneen announcing the regiment would leave Chicago on the afternoon train. General Young is in command. Blind for five years, he remained prolific, composing and publishing gospel hymns and preparing a history of hymnody. His best known tunes include The Ninety and Nine and When the Mists Have Rolled Away.
