William Ball died at the home of W. W. Jenne last Thursday after a short illness. He was 81 years old and had lived with the Jenne family for about 30 years as a distant relative of Mrs. Jenne. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence and drew a large crowd.
A Republican exhortation warns supporters not to count victory before votes are cast and urges turnout on election day. The speaker emphasizes staying home voters could lose and calls for voting early and straight ticket to secure wins for Republicans.
At a congregational meeting the Presbyterian church members call Dr. R. Cooper Berry of Bennett Nebraska to lead the church. Rev Bennett will not start until the new year with Rev Davis of Pawnee City conducting services each Sunday morning and evening in the interim.
The Brown County library received copies of the Brown County World and Herbert's Magazine. A list of Jacob Abbott biographies is posted for readers to locate the series. The science class from Central High used the library for research and Miss Bowers hosts a "Library Party" to promote reading and card use among second graders.
Robert Pool and Ida Wells were joined in marriage at the county judge’s office on Sunday October 25 at 10:80 a.m. Rev. D L Dunkleberger officiated.
A minor early week clash between a road overseer and a local farmer near Salem ended amicably out of court. The defendant paid the costs and was glad the trouble ended quickly, recognizing both acted hastily.
The Eames piano recital at the Gehling last Friday evening drew a large audience. Prof Eames offered a superb program and demonstrated rare musical talent, holding listeners in wrapt attention for two hours. Funds raised about $25 will go to the treasury to sponsor another similar treat.
A letter urges turning on street lights earlier in the evening to protect women and girls. It argues 6 pm lighting reduces assaults as women travel home after work, noting recent incidents of harassment before midnight. The writer emphasizes safety and public lighting as essential.
Cooper and Linn of Cooper and Linn dissolve their partnership. Linn keeps a 200 acre farm west of Humboldt and 14 Burlington railroad elevators. Cooper retains the Humboldt mill, electric light plant and a 100 acre town area farm. The firm began with J. L. Linn and A. Cooper in the 1870s and built Humboldt’s leading mill, surviving a fire and rebuilding larger.
M Ailer of Stella was arrested in Auburn Tuesday on a charge of stealing two fifty dollar bills. He had passed one bill at Howe, which led to his arrest.
Mrs. De Moran learns her husband Will J Moran was found dead in a Chicago alley. Police offered no clear explanation. Moran, from a Dakota land drawing, had traveled to inspect land with a LeMars partner. He left with 3150 and had only 8 dollars when found. Funeral held in town with Rev Neide officiating. burial at Steele Cemetery.
Hugh Philpot a prosperous farmer north of Humboldt died at his home Sunday after a year long illness cancer. He was a young man with a bright future and spent time in St. Joe and at health springs seeking recovery. He leaves a wife and two small children. News arrived Tuesday of the death of Steven Sansom, an aged farmer living near Humboldt.
A busy week featured a reception at Mrs. W. G. Lyford’s home, a Christian church tea raising about 28, Highlander drill team party, and a Halloween gathering hosted by Miss Bessie Bohrer. A large German celebration despite muddy roads drew Nebraska City visitors, with concerts, speeches, and a parade at Gehling hall.
Miss Nelle Snyder hosted a Saturday luncheon at 1 pm for her guest Mrs Will Green of Dodge City Kansas with 20 covers. The St Agnes Guild held its regular monthly social Monday evening with Miss Meeker Cain as hostess and a night of games followed by refreshments.
The Presbyterian Ladies Ken sington will be entertained next Sunday at the home of Mrs. Geo. Jennings. The hostess will be assisted by Mrs. Fred Brecht, Mrs. Geo. Huffman and Mrs. Harvey Wahl. All are invited.
Mrs. T. J. Gist will host a 10 oclock matinee musical with honored guests Mrs. W. A. Harrison of York Mrs. Charles Cone of Lincoln Mrs. H. T. Hitchcock of Lincoln Mrs. J. R. Cain Jr. of Stella and Mrs. S. R. Gist of Humboldt who joined a house party at the Gist home this week. It is suggested using the road drag on the Missouri Pacific.
John H. Hutchings, County Clerk, explains heavy workload from new laws and year end business. He says he has not spoken to all voters but asks for continued support at the polls next Tuesday, asserting his tenure has met voters' expectations.
