The Kilties band drew enthusiastic crowds at Chautauqua in Chautauqua Monday. Pipe Major Angus Fraser received strong praise for his sword dance and Sailor's Hornpipe. The evening concert was packed with no standing room, and Mr Fraser earned even warmer applause.
The passage notes that most people treat one minor necessity as an irritating expense and suggests that inquiry will reveal this pattern in individuals.

The Richardson County Medical Association met in regular session in this city on Thursday. Wives of all members attended and hosted visiting ladies. A business session took place at the Elks parlors in the afternoon and a banquet followed at 6 o'clock. The group then attended the chautauqua together.
Mrs Chas Dockhorn was operated on Wednesday morning at her sister Mrs Grant Windle's home for excision of part of the hip bone. The surgeons were Dr Houston with assistants Dr Boose and Dr Reneker. The procedure was successful and the patient is weak but improving.
Chas. Shock of Auburn visited town last Saturday. Mrs. Fred Cleveland and her daughter Jeanette of Nebraska City spent a few days this week visiting the George Cleveland family.
Work on the post office renovation proceeds but weathered plaster fell on the south side during removal of old wallpaper, slowing progress.
The Palls City Chautauqua opened Sunday with a large crowd despite poor country roads. The day featured the Palls City chorus under Dr. E R Mathers, sermons by Rev. E T Hagerman, and a praised lecture. Gov Cummins spoke on railroads, Col Ham and the Midland Concert Company entertained, and plans to continue the event next week and potentially make it permanent.
Large crowds travel from Kansas towns plus Humboldt Stella Rule and Verdon to Falls City for the chautauqua. John Brutn serves ice cream and treats while Gerhart is billed for next Sunday as attendance grows despite bad roads and heavy work. Falls City backs the summer event strongly and anticipates a record crowd.
The Chautauqua grounds offer free admission on Sunday July 28 with a free morning sermon by Dr. Lloyd at 10 30 am Seeing God and being Happy and a special sacred music program by the Hite Monroe company. A second sacred concert at 2 pm features Hon G A Gearhart followed by vesper services and sacred moving pictures. Dr Thomas Mc Clary delivers The Mission of Mirth in the evening.
Dr D F Fox, famed eloquent lecturer, will speak at 2 30 pm Wednesday July 31 on The Neglected Cavalier. The event features ample music by Hite Monroe Virginia Warblers Royal Male Quartette and Harnack Military Band. Union Sunday school at 9 30 am Sunday morning services invites all city and countryside pupils to attend.
Helen Tanner celebrated her sixth birthday with a long afternoon of outdoor games and refreshments. She received many pretty gifts from her friends as well wishes for many happy returns of the day.
Miss Dorothea White hosted a large gathering of young ladies on Tuesday at 9:30 AM. Guests from Hiawatha Des Moines Kansas City and Montpelier enjoyed guessing games a fortune telling activity luncheon and music before departing for chautauqua grounds. Mrs A E Gantt later hosted a small Sunday breakfast for friends at 10:00 AM with an excellent repast.
John Schmechel born in West Preusen Germany on December 12 1826 died July 23 1906 at his city home after gall bladder complications and stomach hemorrhage. He moved with his wife Justin Teshhmer to America in 1868 and farmed six miles northeast of town before moving to town. Survived by his wife three daughters Mrs Zorn Mrs Zorn and Mrs Brecht and many grandchildren. Funeral service held at Evangelical Lutheran church with Rev Gradewohl officiating and interment at Werner cemetery.
The note announces the Pioneer Picnic to be held August 14 and 15 at Verdon with broad public invitation. It mentions Mrs. Jos Culp of Hooper Colorado visiting her daughter Mrs. Grant Windle and being there for the operation on her daughter Mrs. Dockhorn Wednesday morning.
The program on Tuesday and Wednesday featured Miss Stineman the violinist and Miss Miller the reader whose performances found a warm response from the audience appreciating artistic talent.
Among those aboard the ill fated Columbia that met disaster in Shelter Cave were Mrs Oscar G Geiger formerly Miss Geraldine Forney of Farley Missouri daughter of Jerry Forney who once lived here. Mr and Mrs Liggett were on their honeymoon trip traveling from San Francisco to Portland Oregon relatives of Mrs Liggett have not yet heard if they were rescued.
William Cade and a companion found a two and a half inch body butterfly with a wingspan near six inches on the north side of the Richardson County Bank. The insect displays a deep orange body, cream underside, brown and cream patterned wings, and a second orange wing side. Witnesses plan to send it to Lincoln University for identification.
