A visiting summer maid sat with a loyal youth in Henry Smith’s park Sunday night as a society girl sang softly in contralto, singing draw me nearer. The remark that the man in the moon knows the youth was obedient is noted as a serious claim.
Falls City forms a local humane society with officers H. C. Davis as president Rev E E Haskins as vice president Mrs Ida Ransom as secretary treasurer and C Hershey as humane officer. By laws are adopted and annual membership set at fifty cents. Much good work is anticipated.
Geo Abbott found the banks of Crystal Lake strewn with dead catfish and crops pies after an apparent night vandalism using dynamite or similar means. Abbott offers a $25 reward for arrest and conviction of the offenders and vows strict future watch. Henry Patterson visited on business.
Article reflects on a faded 1806 drawing of Falls City showing the Minnick hotel site and surrounding early buildings. It recalls memory of the hotel as social center, the Joe Burbank store, the Broadgage newspaper office, the Dorrington and Reavis law offices, and other era structures. Miss Grace Belpere of Rule and Max Guesser of Nebraska City married at noon in the bride’s parents home. Rev. Kincaid officiated as Vesta Vanvalkenberg played. The couple will reside in Rule with a reception and numerous gifts.
John Joseph injured a finger while lowering an awning when a rod joint caught it. A heavy gold ring on his finger was crushed and cut the flesh, a jeweler had to remove the ring before dressing the wound. Recovery expected to be complete.
A severe storm struck Rulo on Wednesday afternoon at 240, bringing torrential rain and hurricane like winds. The downpour caused major damage to corn and apple crops.
Judge Wilhite again handled Barada liquor cases. Arthur Nixon’s case was dismissed for lack of material evidence. Jim Smith was bound over on a $250 bond. Barada, a prohibition town, remains a struggling effort.
A major thunderstorm swept Richardson county last Thursday evening with Shubert hardest hit. Wheat stacks burned, a church and a livery barn struck by lightning. Liveryman W B Boyd lost three horses when lightning struck the barn. Jim Mertz lost several horses but none were killed.
Mary Sinclair and Mrs Will Williams of Preston spent Wednesday in town. Mabel Clark traveled from Chicago for a visit with Mrs Tom McKiever and family. James McKiever visited Hiawatha for a baseball game and a band concert. W E Kentner from Coffeeville Kansas plans a few weeks with his city friends. Fred and George Cleveland fished after the storm bringing home fifteen pounds of fish. Mrs John Wertz of Nashville Michigan, a relative of Mrs W S Korner, visits with her son and his wife.
Mrs. Chas Sherman of Kankakee Illinois and Mrs D McLeod of Council Bluffs Iowa spent part of last week in this city with their sister Mrs H C Davis. The three sisters left Saturday for Hamburg Iowa where they spent a few days with relatives.
Harry Cain Carl Sehlameyer Guy Crook and Fred Cleveland Jr returned Wednesday from the Missouri Lakes. Fred and Guy have been there more than a week and returned with twenty five pound of fine black bass. They report more than a pleasant time.
Word reached Thursday that Judge A H Babcock of Beatrice was in a dying condition. He fell ill at Auburn during the June term, adjourned court, and returned home. His heart is failing and his demise is expected within hours. Friends mourn a just judge and Christian gentleman.
Last Sunday Mrs G W Inskeep fell into an open cellar-way and suffered severe bruises. Henry Fehr's infant son broke an arm from a fall on a porch last Saturday. fracture reduced and child recovering. Saturday morning Mrs Wim Boose got concentrated lye in her eyes causing pain but not expected to cause lasting harm.
Miss Bubea Friend died at home in Lawrence Nebraska last Saturday from consumption. She was a Ursuline convent teacher and later joined York's religious house where she was still in novitiate when called to eternal life. Her piety and Christian character drew sincere regrets among many. Albyn Frank son of M A Frank of Falls City died in Omaha last Sunday from chronic stomach trouble. He grew up in Falls City and visited his father often. Funeral was in Omaha on Wednesday with Mrs Frank and son Tom attending. Frank once served as deputy clerk of the federal court under Judge Dundy and held similar roles.
Grandma Mellhorn aged 76 dies at daughter Mrs. George A. Schock’s home on Thursday July 15 1905. She leaves four children including Martin Charles Madaies Mrs. George Schock and Mrs. Kate Schock. Four grandchildren Mattie Jennie Jed Schock and William Mellhorn. Funeral held at George Schock home with Rev EB Haskins officiating. burial in Steele Cemetery.
