A grocery ad lists Christmas candies English walnuts pecans almonds and a full line of loose Wiles fancy crackers and cakes. It promotes low prices on canned goods apples potatoes flour meal bacon hams and staples and offers four pounds of candy for 25 cents with phone contact 14.
Friends mourn the sudden death of Mat thew Hoffman after a period of failing health. Born October 29 1875 in Galesburg Illinois he moved to the city with his parents about nineteen years ago. His family has endured heavy losses including a drowning death years ago in the Nemaha and the deaths of three sons and a daughter, leaving a son and daughter with his widow mother in declining years. The community offers sympathy during this time of trial.
The council postponed the final reading of the telephone ordinance after Mr. Morehead requested appointing a council committee to negotiate terms between the home and rural telephone companies. Mayor Leyda will appoint the committee, and a January report is expected with an amicable adjustment.
W A Margrave narrowly escaped serious injury Friday driving from Falls City when his horses bolted after a dog near the old Forney farm. He fainted from exhaustion after finally stopping the team at a wood pile beside Thacker mill.
Rural route men from the county met at the Bode hall in this city on Saturday evening for a productive session. After business, attendees enjoyed social games and dancing, followed by a banquet. Officials say the gathering was enjoyable and profitable, with Verdon named for the next convention location.
A letter from Falls City child Marion Warner asks Santa for a telephone a doll a ring and spoons to be sent to her Nebraska home before she returns. The note also asks a rag doll for her cousin Elizabeth Fisher and is part of a local paper spread. The column then describes a social gathering at Mrs I C Maust and a surprise visit organized by W G Lyford with several clerks and their spouses, followed by games music and treats.
The Elks celebrated a successful reception last Friday night with about two hundred guests. The club rooms were festooned with roses and ferns while couples in the ball room and guests in card and billiard rooms filled the halls until morning. Notable out of town attendees included Judge and Mrs McCarty and County Attorney and Mrs French of Auburn.

The Christian Endeavor Society held a 10 cent tea at the Presbyterian church last evening, with about twenty four friends surprising Helen Folner at her home on Sunday. The St Martha's Guild hosted a 10 cent tea at the Episcopal rectory, noted as a pleasant social affair. Grace Van Winkle entertained guests for the Misses Price, dainty refreshments noted. Mrs P H Jussen hosted about thirty five ladies at a week day lawn party with a pleasant afternoon and refreshments.
Citizens convene in court room Monday evening to urge the Burlington to pay taxes for 1904 and 1905. The gathering includes representative taxpayers and expresses strong dissatisfaction as the Burlington lately declines tax responsibility.
United States investigators probe land fraud involving soldier widows losing homesteads to western owners. The Bilbys across the river are indicted by the Topeka grand jury. Indictments target Kansas residents for perjury to prompt widows to file entries and lease lands to ranchers. Reavis and Reavis of this city represent several defendants in Kansas and Nebraska courts.
Wim Rieger and Red Seabold will fit rooms over the State Bank to launch a combined real estate, insurance, and loan business at the start of the year. The two men are described as rustlers and the note predicts a successful career in their new venture.
