The southern conference of the German Nebraska synod meets at the Muddy church southeast of Verdon from Thursday April 25 to Sunday April 98. Sunday services are held morning afternoon and evening with the annual Mission feast. Evening services will be in English. Everyone is invited to attend.
Last Thursday the Knights and Ladies of Security council No 610 met at Waht's hall in regular session. Eleven candidates were initiated and several applications received. Dr Past and wife attended for the first time since returning from an eastern trip. Dr Wilson and District Deputy Harrison spoke on the order’s good work. A short musical program followed and a bountiful supper was served in the banquet hall.
The Miles case trial closed at noon Wednesday with Judge Raper taking the matter under advisement after Mahony for the defense and Webster for the plaintiffs delivered lengthy arguments. Webster fell ill delaying closing remarks briefly, and the judge received high praise for fair conduct amid a bitter trial. James Hossack left for Hartington Nebraska to oversee as foreman of Western Bridge and Construction.
The library contest ended with 182,225 total votes and three top candidates. Miles lodge received 65,742 votes, Convent 65,516, and Library 16,953, granting Elles the library and commendation to the boys for completing the project.
Word reached early this week that Rev Giffin formerly of this city was severely injured at his Colorado Springs home. He was struck by a street car, rendered unconscious for hours, but indications point to a speedy recovery and no permanent injury, though friends fear a severe shock at his age.
The W C T U will hold a special meeting Friday May 4 at Brethren Church. A county convention of surrounding towns is planned for Monday May 7. Members able to host or assist delegates at the depot or in town are urged to attend and welcome all visitors with enthusiasm.
Mrs Jacob Arnold died suddenly at the family residence near Barada on Tuesday. The coroner's jury reports death from enlargement of the heart and natural causes. The death brings sorrow to Richardson County, where she was well known and esteemed. The inquest was held in Richardson County on April 23, 1907, by coroner Dr George W Reneker, with jurors B C Duerfelu y Mike Kars r Jacob F Mack Fred Mertz Karl Mongold and D D Reavis.
Harry Mann of Humboldt toured the area on Wednesday to erect a monument at the grave of K. K. Kentner in Steele cemetery.
The Knights of Pythias in this city held a milestone meeting to burn the mortgage on their third story hall after liquidating the debt. About two hundred members and seventy five visitors from nearby lodges attended. Speeches by W. S. Leyda and F. J. Kelley followed the mortgage burning, with refreshments and social gatherings extending into the night.
The Water and Light Commissioner J Wirpanica urges all overdue accounts to settle promptly. His term ends May 1 1907 and he desires all collections completed by then. Office hours are 1:30 p.m. to sundown.
Mr Lively was kicked by a horse while delivering mail on his Barada route Thursday. Postmaster Martin finished the route for him and Mr Lively is being cared for at Barada with hopes for a speedy recovery.
Rudolph Voerle and wife living north of Barada were burning stalks when Mrs Voegle’s clothing ignited. He tried to put out the flames, burning both hands severely. Mrs Voegle suffered extensive injuries along the left side from feet to head. Dr. Van Osdel treated the injuries. no fatal outcome expected.
Bishop William of the Nebraska Diocese conducted his annual visitation at St. Thomas Church on Monday evening. He administered the rite of confirmation and delivered a powerful sermon on Man shall not live by bread alone, praised for clear enunciation and earnest delivery that held the forty minute audience.
A flyer urges residents to attend the Gehling theatre concert on Wednesday evening May 8 to fund future Falls City band concerts. Supporters are promised enjoyment and the option to pay thirty-five or fifty cents, ensuring a summer concert series.
Pearl Lawrence presided as the school term closed on December 27 with Arbor Day activities. Pupils planted a tree with each student taking part while parents arrived with baskets for a picnic lunch. The day was described as a holiday and a fitting, satisfactory close to the term for the entire district.
