Pioneer merchant William Hufstedler dies after patriotic march
William Hufstedler a Fairfield dry goods pioneer and senior partner of Hufstedler & Baker died of heart failure in his chair after marching to Chautauqua park for a patriotic event. Born 1843 in Indiana he served in the Twenty fifth Iowa during the Civil War and later built a long local business career. He is survived by his widow and a brother John Hufstedler.

Peebler and Garber Families in Reunion
A Jefferson County reunion of the Peebler and Garber families took place September 14, 1918 at the Old Brethren church in Des Moines township. Some 115 attendees gathered from across the state, sharing baskets at noon. Michael F. Peebler and John Garber were early settlers in the township in 1838, before railroads and mills. Officers elected for the next year were Sam Eshelman president, I. A. Peebler vice president, and J. W. Peebler secretary. The day featured a social program before departures around 5 p.m., with hopes for a repeat gathering next year.

Janitor Benj Mikesell Found Dead at Lincoln School
The janitor Benj Mikesell, seventy five, was found dead in a basement chair after a Wednesday afternoon incident at Lincoln School when the bell failed to ring. Death from heart attack. He served in the Civil War with E Company of the Second Iowa and had a draying business career in the city. Survived by widow, five children and a brother J R Mikesell. funeral arrangements not yet set.

Des Moines reporters note 300 Iowa Farmers Union delegates grilled Governor Harding at their annual convention. They demanded why no farmer sits on the state council of defense and passed a resolution inviting a defense member to attend all meetings. The president admitted no farmer had been found for the council.

Old Soldiers End Thirtieth Iowa Reunion With Pledges
The final reunion of the Thirtieth Iowa Infantry, held Wednesday and Thursday, drew 24 attendees for its thirty sixth annual gathering. Major Cramer presided as association president, and a two day program included resolutions pledging full support for the war effort and opposing political prejudice.
Gospel Team Offers Country Church Aid
Secretary Wnorowski of the Fairfield gospel team asks rural churches to host occasional gospel team services. A speaker and three to four men will come to provide a Sunday service for one to three weeks with transport and lodging provided by the church. Interested groups should contact B. F. Old Settlers Day Draws Big Crowd in Fairfield
The annual Old Settlers Day in Fairfield attracted a large crowd estimated between 10 000 and 15 000 under mild weather. Attendance was high but festivities were subdued with few parade floats and no lavish amusements. War trophies from the Chicago exposition, arranged by R W Lamson, drew much interest from thousands of spectators. Hon Nate Kendall of Albia delivered a stirring wartime address to close the day.
