Basel and London reports say the International Socialist congress ordered a 24 hour worldwide antiwar strike starting December 6 to prevent war including the Balkan conflict. Oswego New York November 26 Dr Mary Walker the noted advocate of women s rights and dress reform is eighty years old today Her life has spanned travel leadership in New York and Washington and she recently recovered from a serious illness She was born in Oswego in 1832 attended Syracuse Medical College graduating in 1855 practiced in Columbus and Rome later serving as an Army surgeon during the Civil War and earning a medal of honor.
Detroit reports show the suffrage amendment appears defeated with official returns from 80 of 83 counties and unofficial from the rest indicating an adverse majority around 723. Suffragist leaders allege fraud in the voting.
In Romney W V Nov 23 a bandit was killed after a hold up of farmer Lee Inskip. Inskip’s housekeeper screamed and was knocked down as the bandits forced him inside. Inskip freed a hand and shot one bandit dead then dueled the other, both men being wounded. The dead bandit was identified as Frank Hardy a negro resident nearby.
Cuero Texas November 23 The Texas governor will lead a turkey parade with his staff in full uniform marking the annual turkey movement to market around Thanksgiving. Cuero sits in a major turkey growing district as 10 000 gobblers head to market for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
John J. Cohen was arrested in Colorado Springs after declaring he would kill Governor Wilson on sight. He admitted being in Chicago during Roosevelt's visit and in New Orleans during Taft's visit, and was held until secret service agents arrived.
The City of Fairfield vs Herman Earle ended with a not guilty verdict after six and a half hours deliberation. Testimony cited a ten mile an hour city limit. witnesses claimed the car was under eight miles per hour amid repairs and a barking dog incident. The case influences future prosecutions and related matters in Ottumwa and Knapp areas. Justice Tompkins discharged the panel after indications a verdict could not be reached. The jury stood one for conviction eleven for acquittal. He may face trial in New York on related charges from the estate administration.
New York Nov 26 President Horace Fogel of the Philadelphia Nationals announced his resignation after making sensational charges against National League President Lynch and umpires. He was to have faced trial on serious charges.
Salem Mass November 26. Ettor Giovannitti and Caruso acquitted of murder tied to the Lawrence strike killing of a woman striker. Caruso faces an assault with intent to murder indictment, Giovannitti and Ettor charged with inciting a riot. all released on bonds or recognizance and vow to continue organizing.
