Reduction in Wages Sparks Iowa Labor Strike Call

Labor groups in Des Moines threaten a strike to resist wage cuts and longer hours amid financial strain. Harry Strief, secretary of the Iowa Federal Labor, says the executive committee will oppose any wage reduction or changes in payment terms. The federation backs bankers but opposes employers shifting burdens onto workers. A state rep advised an assessment to fund action against the Los Angeles Times and unions were urged to press Congress on the Speakership vote.

Cedar Falls Iowa March 8 The Cedar Falls school board at its monthly meeting passed a resolution requiring teachers employed in the public schools to abstain from attending dances. The board stands firm in its stance and action following proof of teachers dancing.

Polk will leaves four million estate to widow and children

Des Moines capitalists J S Polk who promoted street railways left an estate of about four million dollars. The last will disposes the property equally among his widow and four children. It provides that Polk’s controlling interests in Des Moines city railway interurban railroad Red Rock Coal Mining company and United Improvement company be kept intact.

Funeral of Mrs Downing in Rome Iowa

The funeral services for Mrs. E. Downing were held at the Baptist church in Rome at 10 o'clock this morning conducted by Rev. Jonathan Lee. A large gathering of friends and relatives attended. Interment followed at Greenmound cemetery.

Mr and Mrs J L Gee of Mt Pleasant Ia marked their fifty sixth wedding anniversary on Wednesday. They married fifty six years ago and moved to Mt Pleasant then. Salem Couple Elopes Striking Rural Salem Event

Neva Foss age 17 daughter of Mr and Mrs John Foss left home Sunday evening to elope with Harold Young after parental restrictions. They were last seen driving toward Rome with Neva wearing blue. Sheriff and family searched the countryside with no trace by Monday dusk.

Iowa City reports a vigorous practice as the Iowa team scrimmaged against the freshmen. The squad, minus Knowlton with a sprain, showed fierce play with two freshmen injured. Donald Fowler Vanishes Then Returns Home

In Ames Iowa a 12 year old Donald Fowler disappeared for two days and nights living rough in Des Moines. His frantic father alerted town marshals and city police but Donald later reappeared and said city life grew stale. He will stay with his parents until he is older.

Robbers Fail to Open Hedrick Iowa Safe

Hedrick Iowa November 7 burglars damaged the Hedrick post office safe but did not open it. The combination and handle were broken off and Postmaster Morrison cannot open it. On November 4, 1907, the board with H. C. Pattison and others received delinquent tax collection totaling 1000.27 dollars at a cost of 151 dollars, to be filed. John W. McLean reported city poor assistance for 64 people costing 212.03 dollars. After approving both reports the board adjourned to 9 a.m. the next day.

Board met on Tuesday November 5 1907 with all members present. R J Wilson et al petitioned for a constable to fill a vacancy in Fairfield township and B F Black was appointed. The Board canvassed results from the November 5 1907 special election in Center township awarding 47 votes for Justice of the Peace to a candidate with veiled totals and two contenders for constable. D B Hedge was chosen by lot over Joseph Shelton after tie. The day closed with other business and adjournment to 9 am tomorrow.

On Friday November 8 1907 the quarterly report of J E Bower county recorder lists revenues from mortgages real estate chattel and other items totaling 138 10 including Park’s charter phases and miscellaneous items. Sheriff W H Neibert’s report was approved and Bond of B F Black as constable Fairfield township approved. Telegraph and telephone line valuations across Jefferson county Iowa show Western Union 45.15 miles at 75 per mile totaling 3386 25 and Iowa Telephone Company segments across Walnut Penn Polk Locust Grove and Fairfield townships with miles and per mile rates yielding various sums.

Paroled Convict Miller Vanishes From Parole Plan

Ft. Madison Iowa reports state prison authorities seek paroled prisoner J. R. Miller who violated parole by disappearing after being set to begin work at the outside shops of the Iowa Farming Tool company on November first. The parole condition required six months of employment, but Miller left between the scheduled dates.
