Secretary Noble of the Interior Department is expected to attend the annual reunion of the Third Iowa Cavalry in this city this fall. Noble is idol of the Third Iowa boys and they favor him as the next president if possible.
Judge Edward Johnstone of Keokuk died at his home last Sunday evening after a brief illness. He was 76, a lifelong Democrat, head of the Keokuk Savings Bank, poet, jurist, and scholar and president of the Columbian Commission, a prominent southeastern Iowa figure.
The McKinley tariff change triggers a notable drawback provision. David A. Wells contends Standard Oil will gain about 1.5 million dollars yearly from tin plate used in its export packages. The company allegedly pressured McKinley and Republicans to include the clause, lowering tin plate cost to about 3.52 per box for the monopoly while general consumers pay around 6.00 per box.

John Swope returns from Mankato to visit Virginia and Pennsylvania, with a granddaughter from Mankato joining him. Memorial services are planned for the 30th. Mr and Mrs Hocket visit friends at Salem.
