The Dan Shepherd murder case dominates the district court with 34 state witnesses and 20 for the defense. The jury, after full deliberation, found Shepherd guilty of manslaughter. sentencing is set for Saturday as speculation grows of a possible new trial. Picayune creek reports a separate tale of buried gold coins totaling 2,780 and a will bequeathing assets to three individuals.
Miss Genevieve Brown of Reveal school Ottumwa won the Wapello county spelling contest held at Adams school. She correctly spelled 1048 of 1050 words to earn the county medal. Miss Ford took second with Webster’s dictionary. Edna Gardner of Eddyville dominated a separate old fashioned match with fifty entrants.
Des Moines reports the Grand Army annual tally shows four fewer posts and 148 fewer members. The state now has 368 Posts and 11 728 members.
Waterloo, Iowa March 3 The Bovee Grinder and Steamer works burned this morning. Loss set at $15,000 with partial insurance. Office and books saved though valuable patterns were destroyed.
Jefferson County Fair association directors met last Friday at the Jefferson club rooms to plan the 1905 fair. They appointed department superintendents and officers, revised the premium list totaling about 4000 dollars with 2500 for the speed department, and discussed expanding or relocating grounds for better space and comfort.
Council Bluffs news reports James Monroe on a twenty nine acre farm two miles east of Woodbine called in neighbors Charles Davis and W C Williams to dig down into a spot on his land, believing he had little time to live.
A German man named Joe Jal oth staggered into a Des Moines police station unable to talk or eat, saying he walked from Grinnell to Des Moines with no food over three days. He was fed bread and meat, recovered, and will be held for several days before being sent to Minnesota.

Ottumwa March 6 A painting contractor Mart Postlewait of 310 Webster Street is missing after a note in his coat reads he will end it all. His family fears he jumped into the Des Moines River near Market Street Bridge. Neighbors say he had been acting queerly and left home yesterday stating he would not return until noon today.
Des Moines reports Fulton Walters a prominent farmer near Altoona killed himself last night at the Walters farm three miles southwest of Altoona. He ended a quiet evening with his three children two daughters aged 16 and 11 and a son 13. He shot himself in his upstairs room and fell on the bed where the children slept.
Denison Iowa March 6. Burglars in Charter Oak objected to paying for a night watch as S B Lyons collected weekly pay from merchants. Lyons notes the merchants protested losing their goods and threats followed. Local authorities investigation continues with no further details available.
Last Saturday evening Fairfield mourned the death of Mrs Geo Townley found dead at home after a day of normal activity. A long-standing heart condition likely caused a sudden fatal attack. Services were held at her home and she was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery with Rev. Marsh officiating.
Mr Harry Massie and Miss Deulah Halferty united in marriage Sunday evening March 5 at the bride’s home 600 south Third street with Rev Alexander Corkey officiating The couple will reside on a farm near Pleasant Plain after April 1st Friends extend blessings for their life together
The Jefferson club held its regular monthly meeting with strong attendance. Mr. Martin of Missouri pump makers impressed members with Fairfield as a location and will report after firm discussions. Ashland Ohio’s MigCo steel range also pursues a western site, boosting Fairfield’s prospects.
Harry Carlin of Sioux City perished in a hotel fire at the Grand Central in Hot Springs Arkansas last Saturday. He was a guest at the hotel and a well known local musician. The identified body will be sent home for burial.
State of Iowa Jefferson County district court April term 1905. Charles LeRoy Whitmore and Albert Whitmore sue Phillip Baughman Mary Baughman J Bernard Moeller and unknown heirs devisees administrators for lands in Jefferson County Iowa including sections 28 72 11 W totaling 102 89 acres and request filing by April 16 1905. The petition claims fee simple ownership and references a mortgage made by William F Moeller and wife Sarah D Moeller to Phillip Baughman dated November 11 1867.
Dated 1905 court filing seeks order to cancel several old Iowa mortgages on real estate. Plaintiffs allege full payment, nonrelease by mortgagees, and claims barred by statute. Mayor proclamation sets Fairfield Iowa city election for March 27 1905 to elect mayor city solicitor treasurer assessor and one councilman from each ward. Registration sessions March 16 17 25 8 am to 9 pm and election day hours 7 am to 7 pm. Voter must reside in ward ten days before election. Cc J Fulton.
