At the Jefferson County Spotted Poland and China Breeders association sale at the Gilbert barn the average price for the hogs was 50 dollars with a top bid of 101 dollars. The sale was managed by C. W. Simmons with assistance from C. A. Smalley.
William Riley Smith ages seventy four went to a neighbor shed early Sunday, drank two ounces of carbolic acid and died quickly. He lived with his son in law Curtis Elliott at 507 East Lowe in Fairfield. Coroner's jury ruled death by self act. He leaves several children in Illinois, Montana, Idaho and elsewhere. Funeral held at the local Methodist church with burial in Glendale.
The Jefferson County Wool Growers association will hold its tenth annual meeting at a Fairfield house on Saturday afternoon March 4. Speaker Mr Casidy from Davis County will discuss care and management of sheep and emphasis on cooperative marketing. Officers currently are President S C Simmons Secretary Charles Clark Treasurer Ned Pequignot. Discussion on handling this year's wool crop to follow. all members urged to attend.
A parent teachers meeting at Blackhawk School No eight features a program by Miss Katherine Millane with songs like Old Zip Coon and I’ll Never Play With You Again, pantomime The Lamp That Went Out, readings by Martha Parrish Lucille Clark and Mrs W J Sumner, and plays The Darkey Wood Dealer Leap Year in a Village With One Gentleman. Supper to raise funds for the school.
Miss Nealey S Knowles from the extension department will guide an all day session on March 22 to outline the year’s program for farmerettes. Ada B F Parsons urges a more successful plan than last year and invites all rural women to attend with sandwiches and a dish to share.
Sheriff Harris returned Tuesday from Leavenworth federal prison with Vernie Wright of College addition who deserted from the army after three weeks of service.
An unidentified masked bandit robbed Burlington station late Saturday at 9 30 pm, forcing W C Lowry to surrender $167 85 from the cash drawer. A second man on the platform was seen as an apparent accomplice. Local officers suspect a local, first-time job by a skilled actor. Police are pursuing multiple crews.
The Circle Girls of the Christian church will present a program next Sunday evening at 7 30 at the church. The event features songs, a pageant of light and darkness, character readings, and a reading titled Three Knocks That Summoned in the Night. Authors and interpreters include Io Starr Irene Myers Rosalie Higby Elizabeth Fry Bernice Nicola and others. Proceeds aid the girls work.

Hampshire hog breeders of Van Buren county plan a March 4 sale at Wick field farms Cantril. About fifty five bred sows and gifts will be offered from top county herds in the fifth annual event. Van Buren is cited as a leading Hampshire producer with $300 000 in 1920 sales. The Wickfield Farms and local breeders publish catalogs to showcase stock. Wickfield will also hold a Sioux City sale March 14 offering fifty four bred sows and gifts.
A vesper organ recital by Prof. Allan Bacon will be held Sunday at 4:30 PM in Barhydt Chapel. The program features works by contemporary American composers and a dedicated Meditation Series for Allan Bacon composed by Russell Broughton.
David Hawkins of Cincinnati faced a misdemeanor warrant last December for passing a fake check. Apprehended after a hiatus, he was found guilty before Justice Harris and fined, then paid with a bad check. Recharged on the second charge, he serves a 30 day county jail term.

Carl Meyer bought the Boston Shoe Parlor of Keokuk and will run it as part of his shoe chain. Keokuk is his boyhood town and The Boston taught him the Upstairs Shoe Store business. He planned to open early this week but a fire delayed the launch.
While walking across the Oscar Peterson forty acres southeast of Lockridge, Mayor Schiller strom found a concealed still. He retrieved a copper wash boiler rebuilt as a still with a soldered lid and coil, confiscated the outfit, and intends to fix it up for his wife.
E D Y Culbertson and family from Round Prairie left Tuesday to settle in Centralia Missouri. Culbertson has taught near Marshalltown and will join the family in the Missouri town. The family is well known among progressive farmers in the county and friends wish them success.
