J. S. Gantz Civil War Veteran Dies at 87
Jacob S. Gantz longtime Jefferson county pioneer and Civil War veteran died at his Fairfield home last Sunday evening February 19 at eighty seven. He served in the Fourth Iowa cavalry saw major battles and was wounded requiring amputation. He was sheriff and assessor in the county and later ran a livery and the Gantz hotel. Surviving are his two wives and children from both marriages. Funeral held at home with G A R and I C C F members present.
