Jacob Veile of Iowa and Richard Veile of Wisconsin, long believed dead by their families, were reunited by chance at the Windsor Hotel in Clinton. A clerk’s glance at the register sparked a letters exchange and a cross state reunion as both men sought lost kin after years apart.
A fierce cyclone swept parts of Appanoose Keokuk and surrounding counties blowing down houses barns and outbuildings. The storm killed hundreds of stock and poultry and ruined grain and crops while scattering debris across fields. Despite extensive damage not a single person was reported dead.
Keokuk woman Sarah Sage aged forty eight committed suicide by carbolic acid in Kuk La after grieving over her husband Eli who died last March. She left two married daughters and a single daughter Delia Sage. The family had moved from Canton Missouri sixteen years ago.
Maines Iowa July 1 Judge Me declares anti trust statutes unconstitutional as applied to four prominent insurance leaders. He rules the statutes violate the fourteenth amendment and the Iowa constitution. The decision could halt trust actions in the state.
Charles N a leading Davenport lawyer attended a meeting in town when a large firecracker exploded in his hand. He sustained severe cuts to his fingers and facial burns, treated at the scene.
A Bloomfield coal company formed by G. P. Fryberger and Bezzenberger plans to mine coal at Soap Creek in Davis County. Prospecting found a seven foot vein at 112 feet depth. shaft sunk to 225 feet with signs of more coal expected. Engineers will continue sinking and equipment the shaft once ready.
The project will take about three months to prepare and put machinery in order. Twenty five miners will start work under G. P. Fryberger. The coal is high quality and the vein is the deepest found in the county. Carbon offers strong shipping as coal can be moved directly from shaft to cars. Davis county has prospected coal before but veins were too shallow. The company plans to organize and elect officers within thirty days.
Muscatine woman seeks Governor Cummins help to sell a Virginia made bureau dated 1788, 117 years old, with a long family history and notable provenance. She notes other antiques fetched high prices and offers to provide references and details of its past usage.
In Montezuma Iowa on June 28 a warranty deed for Hartwick real estate ties church use to strict bans. The grantor H B Smith conveys to the Hartwick Christian church trustees with a clause voiding the deed if an organ or any musical instrument is brought into the church. Another clause voids the conveyance if any unauthorized festival or practice is held, reverting the property to dissenting church members.
Hedrick Iowa grocer J C Burns mistook a bottle labeled beef wine and iron for medicine and tasted it. The diluted carbolic acid burned his mouth but he swallowed little. doctors expect a recovery in a few days. Burns leads J C Burns & Son, a long standing local grocery firm.
Former Speaker D B Henderson is confined to his hotel in Dubuque Iowa after a slight stroke affecting the right side. He is improving though his condition remains serious and relatives deny a second shock. Hopes crescente he may leave his apartments in a few days.
A early morning blaze in Mt. Pleasant Iowa caused about 20000 in damage to the Ross barn Taft shop Dyall gallery Roper barn and other structures. A mystery origin suspected possibly a giant firecracker with flames threatening the Methodist and Congregational churches. Firemen volunteers and a strong water system kept the blaze from wider spread and no livestock were lost.
An Illinois woman seeks the name and whereabouts of an Iowa farmer widower with three children who befriended her at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. She hopes to locate him through John J. Wahling of Cincinnati, seeking to reunite with the man and perhaps return to Iowa.
John P. Babcock, who settled north of Washington, Iowa, in 1855 after moving from Ohio, died aged 77 from a complication of disease. Born in Rensselaer County New York he came west in youth with his family and made his home in this county. He lived a long, respected life in the community.
Obituary notes a longtime Baptist church member who moved from Ohio to Washington County. He served as a leading figure in the church for years and is survived by a wife and three children.
Douglas A. Mellor, a rural mail carrier on Osceola route No. 3, died June 28 after a sudden illness linked to alcohol. Authorities suspect wood alcohol or poison in liquor. autopsy planned. He left a wife and six children in poverty and carried $1,000 W. O. W. insurance.
Boone Iowa June 28 Henry Coleman a colored student wins the first Elwell memorial scholarship to Cornell College. Unanimous committee choice Coleman will start four years at Cornell this fall after graduating this year as class valedictorian. Scholarship honors J K Elwell and his wife.

Chicago July 1 after a three month investigation with over one hundred witnesses the federal grand jury indicted seventeen men prominent in the packing industry for Sherman antitrust violations and four officials of Schwarzschild and Sulzberger for alleged illegal rebates to railroads. Bills were voted against Armour and Co Swift and Co Nelson Morris Co Cudahy Packing Co and Fairbanks Canning Co.
The federal jury in Ft. Dodge awarded McDonough $7,600 in the case against the Chicago Great Western Railroad for injuries from a boiler explosion at Clewein shops. McDonough alleged lasting disability and agony, seeking $25,000 after a nine day trial.
A Sac and Fox Indian living under tribal relation cannot sue in a Tama county state court. Judge G W Burnham denied the action over a pony killing on the Chicago and North Western railroad right of way. The case may be appealed up to higher courts, affecting many merchants and tribe members near the reservation.
In Richland Iowa on the last Sunday Mr and Mrs Levi Bray found burglars had entered their home by removing a window screen. The suspects were captured near Pleasant Plain and brought back to town. They pleaded guilty and were taken to Sigourney to await grand jury action. Names given: George Ramsey 19 and Guy Scott ?
A Northwestern freight engine was wrecked at DeWitt Iowa on June 29 causing a derailment and a several hour delay to traffic. The engine attached to a special stock train left the track when the firebox dropped and broke apart. A wreck train from Clinton was dispatched and took hours to clear the lines.
