Variety of Local Advertisements and County Board Actions

A collage of 1889 local notices includes Perry King butter, P O Restaurant oysters, Voorhies' hats and neckwear, Salvation Army work in Albia, and a flood of commercial notices. The Jefferson county board meets with budget allocations for witnesses, bridges, poor farm, and public buildings, plus tax and road decisions and court clerk appointments.

Board awards sheep claim payments for damaged, killed stock

The board examined sheep claims filed with the auditor under the Twentieth general assembly law and ordered the auditor to draw warrants on the domestic animal fund for 75 percent of allowed damages to named parties. It also approved five months of clerk hire for Jefferson county treasurer John F. Loehr and noted bond actions for local officials.

Charley Ripley a model of duty and devotion in 1864

In Glasgow memorials fifteen decades past recount the life of Charley Ripley of Co. E, 2nd Iowa Infantry. The writer lauds Ripley as pious and well loved by his mother, describing his courage in battle and his death from gangrene after two amputations. The piece honors a noble mother and a brave youth.

Stockport Busy Trade and Plans Boost Local Growth

Mr George Unkrich of Glasgow offers instruction for a brass band as Stockport prepares new instruments. A narrow gauge train wreck on Jan 11 caused no injuries and spurred talk of a new church and schoolhouse with $200 subscribed and a half acre of ground donated.
