Representatives from Omaha Chicago St Louis Des Moines Sioux City Kansas City Minneapolis and Milwaukee attended. The group remains optimistic about the coming year's soap business.
Des Moines January 11. Senator James A. Smith presided in the senate and Representative Fred H. Hunter led the house as the thirty third general assembly convened at 10 am. Committees were appointed to notify the other chamber and Governor Garst. A joint session was planned to hear the governor but postponed to Tuesday. Speaker-elect Guy A Feely succeeded W L Harding as temporary chairman.
Mr and Mrs John Lyons newly weds from Clinton County Iowa face hardship while traveling for their honeymoon. They ran out of money in a strange town, cold weather hindered work, and they await aid from relatives as the Salvation Army provides shelter and food until relief arrives.
Adel district court opened with Judge Gamble presiding. The grand jury studied counts including a dispute between Clyde Brenton, cashier of the Dallas Center bank, and farmer Calvin Brewer over a farm lease. Brewer threatened to shoot Brenton, obtained a gun, and was arrested at Huff's home by Sheriff Ross. He posted 5000 bonds to keep the peace but remains jailed for lack of funds.
Personal and local items report a $19,000 loan on real estate by J. A. Huglin. William Louden plans a business trip tonight to Waterloo and St. Paul. Dr. Hayden had surgery this week for a long standing issue and is expected to recover well. R. B. and A. C. Louden left for Kansas City to attend the stock show. return anticipated Thursday night. Dr. J. W. Kime of Fort Dodge, a tuberculosis specialist, lectured to city physicians at the courthouse and the talk was well received.
The East Pleasant Plain Savings Bank held its first annual meeting recently. Officers named for the coming year include President Henry Pickard Vice president Frank Pascha and Cashier Ed N Crumley. Directors listed are Newton Williams Fairfield D H Mealy Pleasant Plain John Diers Packwood Chas Messer Germanville John Craft Germanville.
Rev J H Carmichael a Methodist minister killed Gideon Browning then committed suicide. A letter to his wife contains a full confession describing hypnotic fear, staged church meeting, a fire, a hatchet and knife struggle, and the disposal of Browning's body. Authorities seek motive amid missing traces.
Port Huron Michigan January 8 Identification came via two false teeth linking Gideon Browning of Adair to the Tuesday murder at Battle Run Methodist church in Columbus township. St Clair county supervisors offered a $500 reward for Rev. John H. Carmichael of Adair, the church pastor once thought to be the victim, amid the ongoing investigation.
A man thought to be Rev. John Carmichael of Battle Run Michigan, linked to a church murder case, stayed Thursday night and Friday morning in Cedarburg Wisconsin. He objected to hotel rooms due to storm windows, slept in a boarding house back room, claimed insanity, and left on a northbound streetcar Friday noon.
Six men from Reelfoot Lake were sentenced for murder in the first degree in Walnut Log killings tied to a night rider band. Judge Jones overruled a new trial motion and set Friday February 19 as the execution date for Garrett Johnson Sam Applewhite Tid Burton Roy Ransom Arthur Clear and Fred Pinion while Bud Morris and Bob Huffman received twenty years in the penitentiary.
Dyersville Iowa January 10 Farmers State Bank elected C. A. Smith as president at their annual meeting. Smith is editor of the Dyersville Commercial and is a well known progressive banker in eastern Iowa. He previously served as vice president and is linked to several banks across Dubuque county.
George W. Hughes of Marshalltown Iowa was jailed in justice court yesterday afternoon for stealing his sister Nina Meeker s wedding ring and pawning it for whisky. Meeker valued the ring at ten dollars.
The Iowa State Poultry Fanciers Association opened its state meeting and exhibit in the city with about 1000 birds on the show floors at Spence Carriage Building. Severe weather kept distant fanciers from sending birds, but attendance has been good and exhibitors from Iowa and nearby states are represented. Judging has begun and prizes will be awarded. the event is deemed one of the state’s best poultry shows.
Deputy Clerk Johnson starts duties as the board of supervisors finish January session the heavy two week term. Court filings list several cases including Grimes vs Hadley and Wisecarver vs Wisecarver, plus divorce and partition suits. Marriage licenses issued on January 4 6 for residents of Fairfield and surrounding towns.
Washington January 6 The plan to erect a monument to Senator Allison in Washington originated with General Grenville M Dodge and has drawn favorable comment from several senators. It is seen as a fitting recognition for Allison compared with many honored military figures. Congressional action this session is possible but unlikely due to its short length.
