168th Regiment Praised by Allied Commanders
Col E R Bennett of Des Moines arrives with 26 officers aboard the Sixadla, praising the 168th Infantry as the best regiment in France. Martha Whitmore Petty Rites Held in Fairfield Memorial
Martha M. Whitmore born June 17 1840 in West Rupert Virginia died February 11 1919 at Chariton after living with her daughter in Fairfield for years. She married Leander Petty June 1 1866 and had children Don C Denver and Mrs Vermont Junkin Chariton and three stepsons Edwin J Curtis Neb Grayton Eldora and Horace G Fort Collins. A Presbyterian for many years she lived a devout Christian life and was laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery Fairfield.

Veteran Higley Dies After Long Illness at East Briggs
Theodore F. Higley, Civil War veteran and longtime Fairfield druggist and public servant, died Tuesday at his East Briggs Street home after months of ill health. Born March 21, 1839 in Jamestown New York he served in the Fifteenth Illinois and later the Fourth and Twelfth Illinois Cavalry before muster into the Third U S Heavy Artillery. He lived in Mt Pleasant Iowa and Fairfield where he owned a drug store, served as city clerk and water works superintendent, and married Ella McElhinney then Jennie Boner having five children. Funeral services were held Thursday at his home with Rev. Mosser and burial in Evergreen cemetery.
