Keokuk erupts in celebration as the Water Power bill clears the Senate, permitting construction of a major dam and hydro plants. Officials announce plans to begin work within three years, with Keokuk projecting economic growth and river navigation improvements. News spreads by bells, whistles, and telephones as residents toast the milestone.
Ira Johnston of Muscatine is jailed in Marshalltown on a bigamy charge after eloping with a Marshalltown girl and concealing the marriage. His second wife, Miss Margaret Estersos, daughter of Mr and Mrs F W Estersos, learned of the case and will prosecute. Johnston’s first wife, daughter of Riley Gowey, is preparing to assist. Miss Estersos is heartbroken.
A joint committee of the General Assembly assigned to study Iowa state educational institutions plans a trip starting February 27 to Iowa City and Ames in early March. The panel, comprised of three appointees from each house, will assess the current management system and report findings with comparisons to other methods at the next session.
Ames Iowa February 4 The report against the stereotype Filipino students excel in mathematics at the State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Dean Stanton says the half dozen Filipino students sent by the federal government are strong in math and have performed well in all subjects. The postgraduate group includes students from other states including Wisconsin Colorado and Pennsylvania.
Hedrick Iowa February 2 C W Brown a farmer near Hedrick was declared violently insane and sent to Mt Pleasant after the commissioners determined his condition. He had previously been admitted to an asylum years ago due to dementia from perpetual motion and is now reportedly obsessed with religion.
Montezuma Iowa February 2 The jury in the Geo A Mitchell murder case after an all night session returned a verdict of manslaughter for the slaying of John Parker last August. Sentence is to be passed Saturday morning.

Estherville Iowa February 2 Division Superintendent Brown Division Freight Agent M M Knapp and Division Engineer J Martin were injured when a freight train rear ended their private car attached to the rear of the train. The private car and caboose were telescoped and burned. A relief train and three doctors responded. the injured were moved to the morning train.
Chariton reports the marriage of Guy Pogue and Neva Shaw in the Depot Hotel parlor by Justice Manning. The couple eloped boarding a train at Humeston as the station pulled away, with both families of good standing and no anticipated objections. They left Chariton for Chicago this morning.
Carroll Iowa February 2 B E Lytle a laborer who came from Lohrville took an ounce of laudanum last night at nine with suicidal intent. He threatened death before and acted in the presence of his wife three sons and a daughter. The poison acted slowly and he grew very sick by morning. a physician was called. At eight this evening Lytle was alive but recovery chances were doubtful. He was a hard worker lately given to drinking. the act is blamed on family trouble.
A fire in Mt. Sterling Iowa destroyed the Sherold hotel and adjoining restaurant, sparing most of the business district but causing estimated losses of 2000 to 5000 dollars. Firemen battled the blaze in bitter cold with singed hair and frozen fingers as smoke and water damaged multiple buildings including Behren s hardware and Mc Kibben s drug store. Insurance coverage is not yet known.
A dozen Western Union linemen depart Davenport Iowa for Des Moines on foot to remove an exhausted old wire and replace it with a new line. They travel by handcar for night travel between work sites to avoid disrupting neighboring lines.
Easter Sunday in 1905 is observed on April 23 marking the latest Easter date in over a century. Historical patterns show Easter as late as April 25 only twice since 1786, with Lent following suit by extending the social season into March.
In Centerville Iowa Judge Eichelberger rules cigar slot machines are gambling devices and a pharmacist running them breaches law. Four druggists seek permits. ruling blocks permits and prompts possible appeal to the supreme court. State-wide reaction cheers in Centerville over end of whisky drug stores.
A Des Moines report claimed Cass County Farmers Alliance denounced Hepburn for railroad policy and that he was hung in effigy. The Iowa delegation denounces the act and denounces the publicity as humiliating, stirring widespread comment across Washington.
The Iowa Lillooet Gold Mining Company reports failed settlement efforts with B. B. Bliss through his attorneys. It claims Bliss’ bond with United States Fidelity and Guaranty covers 50 000 and seeks 21 000 plus disputed items. The Bliss estate is under a guardian after Bliss was declared insane.
Birmingham Kansas February 3. Mr Barney Keegan of Kilbourn treated at Chicago Pasteur Institute for twenty one days after bite from his Scotch collie thought rabid. He returns with bead abscess and weakened health. Twenty sheep bitten by the dog died or were killed. Township trustees order dogs restrained or muzzled. Keosauqua follows mayoral order. Hydrophobia is very prevalent in the county.
Day Dunning, former Mt. Ayr banker and Citizens Bank head, was found guilty of fraudulent banking by a jury after eleven and a half hours deliberation. The verdict came at 1:45 am with a 10 to 2 initial ballot. sentencing by Judge Evans is scheduled for this morning in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.
Des Moines reports Governor Cummins issued a requisition on South Dakota for the return to Sioux City of John Wilson also known as Frank Kennedy charged with murder. Wilson is held in Yankton after being identified by local residents. Victim Joseph OBrien was shot dead in the case.
A reader from Washington, D C letters editor Hawk-Eye praising Cr Hepburn for his work in Congress to secure justice in rate bills and his efforts are described as effective. The writer Thos Hedge concurs with the assessment and condemns the Cass county meeting.
A Des Moines dispatch about a February 1 meeting of 400 Cass County farmers in Cumberland Iowa is questioned. The report claims Pete Hepburn was found in effigy Sunday, but sources doubt any link to Cass County farmers and accuse the Des Moines journalist of imagination.
E L Houston, long running a Donovan Commission Co branch in Knoxville, vanished last night with several hundred dollars. The man nicknamed the bucket shop man was regarded as of strict integrity by those who knew him, and his departure took locals by surprise.

Centerville Louisiana report of Peter Gallows blinded by cold vapor in the Bigg Joe shaft. He stepped from a landing as the cage rose and fell 100 feet to the rock below, landing on a mangled body. The cage had stopped at the landing and moved on up after he stepped off.
A Burlington conference in Des Moines arranged for Professor P. G. Holden to join the seed corn trains on the Burlington lines in Iowa. Holden will travel February 27 and 28 and March 3, with more dates after April 15, and the itinerary will cover additional main line branches. Also possible is A. D. Shammel of the U S Department of Agriculture to join the Burlington special.
Iowa fruit man C. C. Jones says the cold in the past three days will injure the peach crop, with temperatures below zero ending any hope of fruit maturing. He notes most Iowa peaches stay for local use, and commercial sales outside the state are rare, but the severe cold likely cuts off even the home supply.
