In Delaware a jail escape attempt by two prisoners was foiled when a bar was severed and a crude saw created from knives. To prevent further escapes, authorities reinforced a middle jail wall. The piece also describes a social scene where a Whist club, entirely of unmarried ladies, meets weekly to improve social life.
W P Hall Lancaster Mo a leading circus buyer plans a 1905 season entry. He has financed major animals and equipment with a $120000 bid on a Geneva Ohio term main circus, and is known for supplying top horses to circuses nationwide. Zollin of Vinton Iowa grows onions and expects a 12000 acre annual crop value with a plow invention cutting labor.
Lakes Ida and Okoboji in Iowa report a booming ice harvest with over one hundred fifty carloads cut daily. Ice runs twenty inches thick and of high quality as Snow belts the region. Rock Island Railway uses about sixty cars in Herville yards with additional cars deployed along Milwaukee and Rock Island routes.
In tan Ia on January 30 the Whist Club of about twenty five unmarried Hampton ladies staged a male attire social. Half wore men's clothes to escort the other half, and a mock marriage was performed with a lady acting as parson. They claim a shortage of eligible men and vow to carry on without them, noting scarce escorts at dances and leap year parties yet to come.
Newton Iowa January 28 The Jasper County Farm Institute and Corn Show closed after three days of success. R Bennett won first for the largest single ear and a monster Yellow Dent ear sold for 1.50. Sam Hughes won first for ten best ears. these sold for 3.50. Henry Wallace of Des Moines gave the closing address on seed corn and crop rotation. Officers named for the next year are J C Hasbleigh president and T J Kating secretary both of Newton.
Carroll Iowa January 22 Judge Powers overruled the motion in the Harvey arson case and sentenced Clyde and Mrs Harvey to three years in the Anamosa penitentiary. The couple may appeal to the supreme court within a year, bond set at 2500 dollars, immediate release to return home to Glidden. The fire at Glidden City hotel last August killed Hobbs brothers who had been lodging there.
Dr. J. O. Ball files in district court to compel A. M. Van Allen to resign as Mt. Pleasant Third ward alderman due to holding both city council seat and county attorney post. Van Allen initially planned to resign but stayed after mayor and council urged him to remain.
Charles Lockhart a director and former president of Standard Oil died after months of illness. He was regarded as one of the oil kings with an estimated wealth range from 75 million to 100 million dollars.
A. J. Larson's 13 year old son, injured yesterday when a shotgun fired while loading, died today after his leg was amputated following the accident near Kanawha Iowa.
Judge Quarton sentenced James Rutledge and Thomas Vivian, the Fonda burglars, to six years in the penitentiary. Henry and George Teesveldt, who broke jail here, received six months in the penitentiary.
Neola Iowa January 28 W G Hamilton a prominent young businessman died at his home from burns suffered in a gasoline explosion that occurred yesterday morning in the town stands.
Jenkins wins judgment for 300 dollars plus costs against Gilliland in a malicious prosecution suit filed after Gilliland was robbed last April and accused Jenkins and others. Jenkins was awarded the sum after a lengthy trial where the defendants were discharged for lack of proof.
The Iowa Manufacturers association authorized a stock company with 100 000 capital to form a mutual insurer. Williams of Waterloo heads the organizing committee. Next meeting set for Waterloo with officers elected O R Green Fr Dodge vice president S W Mercer W F Morrison and a nine member executive committee listed.
Crude oil discovered near Burlington within seven miles, found by well driller R. J. Johnston and analyzed as high grade illuminating oil. Oil seepage suggests a shallow, porous sand formation above shale, with operations expected to begin when weather permits.
In Des Moines on January 28 a small sack of peanuts cost $40 after a scuffle in front of the Capital City State bank. John Keyes John McAnna Alta and Charles Nasser each paid $10 bail amid a brawl where four men were hurt. Police held the suspects at the city jail.
Judge Wheeler sentences T. F. Allen to eighteen months in Fort Madison penitentiary after a jury finds him guilty of larceny from the person in a poker game scheme that left Charles Reynolds robbed while drunk. George Pierson and Earl Morris await next term for hearings. Allen’s family, destitute with five children, faces hardship as Ken is sent to prison. The district court term closes amid a major damage suit between C. B. Johnson and J. C. Voorhees from Anita.

In Oakville Iowa January 27 a funeral procession for Henry Ernsting was disrupted when a freight train frightened the lead horse causing a buggy to overturn. Ottumwa Iowa January 27 stockholders of the Ottumwa Chautauqua association met at the YMCA auditorium. A permanent organization was formed with officers and directors chosen and articles of incorporation adopted. Subscribed stock exceeds the amount needed to guarantee success. The summer assembly in Ottumwa is expected to be among the best in the state.
A morning blaze in Glidden caused about 30000 dollars in loss to the Welch department store including its stock. Insurance coverage exceeds half the value. The Marshalltown Iowa report notes the fire occurred today.
Sioux City police report arrest of Jack Wilson in Yankton South Dakota for the murder of Charles Lafey also known as Jos O Brien in Sioux City four months earlier. Wilson had been previously questioned in a Quimby Iowa bank robbery case but cleared.
Webster City Iowa January 28 the Hamilton county branch of the Iowa Corn Belt Meat Producers association held its annual session at city hall. Delegates were chosen for a February Des Moines meeting. The group adopted a resolution urging an act to empower the Interstate Commerce Commission to declare unjust rates and set immediate just rates, urging Iowa lawmakers to back president Roosevelt on stronger ICC powers. No action on the Hepburn bill. it will be addressed at the state meeting.
Judge Bailie ruled that debts contracted by a cooperative partnership remain binding on members’ private property even after incorporation. Archie Pierce won judgment against ten men for 273.90 each plus costs. the Gruver Creamery plant is valued at about 1,000.

Arthur Ireland a noted labor leader was convicted in Fort Madison Iowa today of assault with intent to commit great bodily injury against Mathison a strike breaker brought in during the Santa Fe machinists strike last summer.
Burlington Iowa observed a citywide hour long union service at First Methodist Church with nearly all businesses closing 1 to 11 am. Saloons and Garrick Theater joined in respect. about a thousand attended, including a 200 strong Elliott's College delegation.
Davenport Iowa January 27 The Davenport Locomotive Works received a cablegram from the Russian government asking if they can fill a contract for 100 dinkey locomotives in nine ty days and bid at once. The plant replied they can supply fifty engines within the time and possibly all 100 depending on material access.
Des Moines reports a hitch between Burlington officials and the Iowa State Grain Dealers Association over a seed corn special. Prof J G Holden will not ride. the Grain Dealers' Association will supervise the specials on other rail lines with Holden as principal speaker.
Ireton Iowa January 27 postmaster S H Carr is accused of forgery by signing the names of prominent farmers to a note. He acted as a loan agent for a Maurice bank but allegedly diverted funds to speculate in South Dakota land. Bondsmen resigned and he lost his post.
The eastern Iowa district fair will be held August 22 to 25 in Winfield. The board pushes plans for a grand exhibition and will meet next Saturday February 4 at 1 30 p m to advance preparations.
The funeral for Mrs. Catherine Ohngemach, aged 97, was held this afternoon in Washington Iowa. Rev. J. B. Schreckengast of the M E church conducted the service.
F A Hart of Ottumwa Iowa a well known traveling man met instant death at Peru Illinois while the Rock Island train No 4 was pulling into the station. He was found mangled under the ears with crushed lower limbs suggesting he fell between cars while moving from one coach to another. He was 35 and a member of the Eagle lodge at Ottumwa.
