Des Moines Indiana December 25 Mrs W E Brown a three month bride swallowed carbolic acid and called her husband at Martin's cigar store to say she was dying. He heard her scream and the phone slipped from his hand as she collapsed unconscious. The frantic exchange ends with no further details.
A humorous Harper's Weekly vignette features a lady in a book store asking for a good train read described as "pathetic." The salesman suggests The Last Days of Pompeii, sparking confusion about Pompeii and the cause of the death from a volcanic eruption.
James Porter Wray longtime Fairfield resident and Baptist church member died Monday December 25 at his southeast Fairfield home aged 87 years 6 months 20 days He was born June 5 1818 in Huntington County Pennsylvania married Rachel J Fee December 17 1840 and moved to Fairfield in 1850 He ran a general store then a north Fairfield farm before returning to town in 1892 He outlived his wife who died January 24 1901 Survived by seven of twelve children Robt McConkey Fannie Troxel Wm Wray Chas Wray George Wray Ella Gibbons and Mrs TR Black Funeral services were held at the Baptist church with Rev Reinking and Rev Littleton officiating and interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
James Burns born December 31 1838 near Bartholomew County Indiana died December 17 1905 at home south of Batavia Iowa He came to Iowa in 1839 married Nancy Jane Walker that year and lived on the family farm for life Survived by three brothers and one sister in Indiana and eight children including William W Walter G Frederic and several daughters The obituary portrays him as a kind father husband and neighbor
Mrs Samuel Reed died at her home last Thursday. Funeral services were held Saturday at the ML E church conducted by Rev Os borne, with interment in Sever Green Cemetery.
Last Tuesday night the death of Mrs Rebecca Scott widow of A B Scott occurred. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev Alex Corkey of Oskaloosa. Interment followed at Evergreen cemetery.
Davenport Iowa December 26 Miss Esther Crandall of Big Rock identified Henry MecKira han a railway clerk killed in a New shops Illinois railroad accident. He and Crandall were to marry on Christmas day. The heartbroken woman was taken home by Reverend D L McNary to Big Rock for burial services.
Jefferson County took part in the Chicago event with steers owned by local breeders. The county earned second, third, and fourth places in several classes. Jerson County displayed exhibits by D. McPherson and received a $50 premium in the 2-year-old calf class. Breeders petitioned for a separate class for agricultural colleges and experimental stations to foster competition and experimentation away from college stations.
The play features aFemale heavy cast with many young women in Southern life roles. Notable characters include Anner Lizer Aunt Coshy and Lelia Croften and a Hallowe en party with tricks and a Jack o Lantern dance. Manager Lou Thoma presents the show Wednesday January 3.

Diagonal Iowa saw R Speck wed Miss Mary Fraser in a quiet ceremony. the couple now in Fairfield at 413 North Court. Speck, a decade merchant in town, is a respected citizen and welcomes his bride who is new to Fairfield.
