Body of county's first World War slain to arrive soon
War Department announces disinterment of Allan Jewett in France. His mother Mrs. Rosella Jewett Conner will receive the body within three months in this city. Jewett was Jefferson county's first casualty after enlisting in the marine corps twelve days after war began and was among early combatants in France. He died after being gassed and was buried near his death site. The American Legion post has named itself in his honor.

Des Moines reports statewide enforcement begins Sept 1. County treasurers received leases approved by the highway commission detailing dimmer headlight requirements to be visible 500 feet ahead and to reveal objects 75 feet ahead. Giant airship ZR-2 explodes over Hull on trial flight
The American ZR-2 dirigible broke in two and burned above Hull during a trial flight. Parachutes were seen as crews rescued. two dead and several injured were landed at Hull infirmary. Officers aboard were Louis H. Maxfield and Valentine N. Bieg among others. The airship's specifications include length 695 feet, 83 ton lift, six engines, and a 72 hour transatlantic range.
