Indianola Iowa April 15 The Simpson College faculty met to handle eight suspended students over the class spirit display and silence when called before the president. Most disciplined deny active involvement but resist aiding others. The outcome remains uncertain as faculty and students await a settlement.
Former Colorado governor C S Thomas closes evidence in Portland mining shares suit valued around 500000 to 600000. He spoke three days, his 1500 page manuscript covering testimony. Justice awaits jury verdict after two prior trials and a Doyle loss of 446900.
Fayette Iowa April 15 The faculty and financiers of Upper Iowa University have been negotiating with Andrew Carnegie for a possible gift of 100000 as an endowment fund Iowa senators Beveridge and Fairbanks have been retained to push the effort and President Bassett from DePauw University is said to influence eastern leaders, with a likely 50000 donation expected.
Richard Fisher of Carroll created a violent scene in Eagle Grove on April 15. He shot at his wife, wounded no one, and tried to shoot the town marshal before fleeing. Captured after a chase, he hanged himself with strips from his coat but was cut down by the jailer and survives with a slim chance of recovery.
Shenandoah Iowa April 15 T L Hayes a brakeman on the K and W railroad had his left arm crushed and broken in five places while coupling at Sharpsburg and was brought to facilities for treatment.
Company surgeons fight to save the injured man's arm after a grave accident at the site, but doctors fear amputation near the shoulder may be necessary to prevent further harm. The patient remains under close care in the hospital.
General Manager Howard announced the Muscatine North and South railroad will extend south to Burlington and continue to Keokuk toward St. Louis. Construction is set to begin May 1, with the Burlington route already surveyed.
In Cedar Falls Iowa on April 15 Fred Hubbell aged 17 accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while duck hunting with his younger brother Wilcott and Fred Olbrich. Olbrich pleaded at two farms one mile away but farmers said they were busy. Olbrich then rushed to town for help while surgeons were dispatched. Hubbell endured agony as he pressed a wet handkerchief to the wound. He attempted to end his suffering by grabbing two guns but was restrained by his brother. Hubbell remains in serious condition.
In Guthrie Center Iowa at the spring election the library tax proposal was rejected though Carnegie offered to fund building the library with five hundred six dollars if maintenance tax passes. A special election will be held soon and is expected to succeed. Heirs contest the Franklin estate will in May and, if upheld, trustees will be appointed to build the home for old ladies as指定 in the will.
Hundreds of University of Iowa medical alumni are expected in Iowa City on May 2 and 3 for the first medical reunion and alumni clinic. The event will feature a bust dedication for the late Dean Middleton of Davenport and a portrait of Dr. J. W. Harriman, with Dr. J. R. Guthrit presiding and Dr. Vernon L. Treynor delivering the Harriman eulogy.
Judge A R Dewey a pioneer Iowa lawyer and longtime district court jurist died at his home in Washington Iowa. He was active as a Mason and leaves a wife a son and a daughter Mrs Mabel Brooking formerly of Ottumwa now Pueblo Colorado. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon under the Knights Templars local commandery auspices.
General Thrift announces Ft Madison will get New Hampton's militia after the Spanish American War unit disbanded. The new company arrives with good equipment, a 1000 yard rifle range nearby, and a well kept drill floor of 45 by 100 feet with a solid armory.
Five Shenandoah high school boys climbed to the top of a 115 foot college tower at night to raise their class color banner. The rope was cut so it could not be hauled down. the banner was left blowing, causing consternation. The youths confessed and agreed to remove it. Randall Henderson later replaced the rope to allow removal.
Iowa City April 15 A thirty five foot launch owned by County Attorney Tim Fairchild went over the Coralville dam on the Iowa River with five men and a boy aboard. A north wind caused loss of steering and the engine failed. The crew clung to a tree trunk on the dam while the boat went over. All were rescued and the 6 year old, Eddie Kloser Jr., was found after a search beneath the vessel.
Leopold Desk company of Burlington may shut its plant after workers in the machine department walked out today demanding a 10 percent wage increase. Company officials say they will permanently close the factory unless they can hire enough independent workers to run the plant on an open shop basis. The firm, with a $50,000 yearly payroll, ships its products nationwide.
Lamont Iowa April 15 The conference of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints approved resolutions to place all church employees on wage equality and extend such equality to members where possible by endorsing a plan already in place and urging broader adoption. A list of superannuated missionaries was authorized. A motion to bar ministers from performing marriages for divorces other than adultery was tabled after prior action in 1896.
James Hassett of Papillion Nebraska aged 50 and a noted Nebraskan is held for extradition in Council Bluffs Iowa. He faces charges of betraying a working girl 20 years old. The case highlights cross state action following an alleged crime.
Des Moines April 16 Iowa filed its annual criminal convictions report stating thirteen murders occurred last year. Two killers were sentenced to hang but not yet executed. Convictions ranged from manslaughter to burglary and larceny with numerous cases in other crimes.
Mrs Craven the woman who claims to be the common law wife of the late Senator Fair was turned over to Des Moines county authorities. She is under close guard at the Delano hotel with a trained nurse and two deputy sheriffs outside her room. Officials plan to file a charge to transfer her to Washington where a private sanitarium may be arranged.
Coe College's junior team defeated Monmouth College at Monmouth Ill in a tight intercollegiate debate over whether Congress should arrange by law for arbitration of conflicts between capital and labor. Debaters were W. H. Phelps E. E. Nicholas and C. C. Knight. Coe took the negative and won two judges' votes.
The annual oratorical contest of the academy of Cornell college in Mt. Vernon Iowa was held this evening. D. O. Cowles of Pleasanton won first honors, Harry Jones of Gilman took second, and Mary Gammon of Laporte placed third. Eight contestants participated, two from each society, with thorough preparation and high overall quality.
