James N. Manning daughter of the secretary of the treasury won a decisive mayoral election in Albany with a lead over 7000. The result marks a Democratic gain of more than 4500 in two years and suggests strength beyond Gov. Hill's influence.

Tariff bill expected to boost revenue by 12 million

A Ways and Means expert calculates the McKinley tariff will raise revenue by at least 12 million despite sugar cuts of 27 million and free-list reductions of 10 million. He notes higher duties on wool, woolen goods, tin plate, flax and hemp products, and some nonessentials like tobacco and hops, will shift costs to consumers, mainly small earners, amounting to five or six times the duty added.

IL B Stone vice president of the C B Q R R resigns and leaves the service. The strike atmosphere may ease in some areas. Likely promotions throughout the line include W. Brown from Iowa lines to general superintendent, with QO E Stewart of Ottumwa and E H Hunter of Des Moines possible successors. Hunter could bring the road closer to the public.

Clarkson on the anti prohibition government

In a Washington interview Clarkson states Iowa must adjust prohibitions after seven years of experiment. He says enforcement fails in cities and Mississippi river counties, urges a modified law for 80 percent of Iowa where accepted and a different method for the remaining 20 percent, and calls for action rather than another constitutional vote.

Iowa County Board Deals With Rail Assessments and Tax Appeals

The Jefferson county board of supervisors adjourned after detailing railroad property valuations for C B Q and I P lines, allocating tax shares to townships and cities. They denied individual tax reductions for some residents while approving bridge and culvert projects and appointing committees for road work and mills.

County Board approves aid for homeless children and damages

The April 10 1800 county board approves paying the American Educational Aid Association twenty five dollars for each child placed in homes. It authorizes the auditor to issue warrants and the treasurer to transfer two thousand dollars from pauper funds. The board also approves domestic animal damage awards at seventy five percent of claims and denies a reduction on Dennis Griffin estate assessment.
