Live cattle export grows as a major enterprise

The export of live cattle has rapidly become important. Twelve years ago it was rare and in the last three years has surged. Data show 37 810 head valued at 1 342 598 in six months ending Dec 31 1877, rising to 75 856 head valued at 4 974 328 in the same period in 1878 with most shipments to England and Cuba and smaller shares to Canada and other regions.

Oregon Senator Proposes Bill on Northern Pacific Railway

Senator Grover of Oregon introduces legislation to extend the main line completion by ten years under conditions. The company must begin work within a year from enactment near Umatilla and extend 200 miles eastward annually. The Portland to Umatilla segment must run on the south side of the Columbia River. Except for lands already owned, agricultural lands within the grant become open to purchase by settlers at 2.50 dollars per acre in 160 acre tracts.
