W. J. Mart Alfred known as Mart Alfred, longtime Burlington station agent at Bernhart, died early Monday after weeks of illness. He was fifty two. Survived by widow, mother in Batavia, daughter, and four brothers James and George in Fairfield Ottumwa Eldon, and a sister Mrs Brown of Batavia. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Batavia Christian Church.
Des Moines Township trustees R. J. Cubbage and W. C. Miller resigned after Judge Vermillion suspended them for alleged misconduct. H. L. Copeland named H. B. Johnson and Fred A. Johnson as successors. board confirmed the appointments.
Attorney General Daugherty criticized coal operators for not meeting miners in a joint conference and said there is no immediate government need to intervene. He warned of local and state duties to restore order and saw no famine danger or price gouging, noting abundant coal nationwide.

Murray releases a March 10 report from 914 savings banks 403 state banks and 21 trust companies showing deposits up by 24.8 million since December 31 1921 while bills payable and rediscounts fall 11.8 million The system shows fewer banks stronger reserves higher profits and total deposits of 556.978 million pointing to a turning tide in Iowa business conditions.
Carl F. Meyer of the Meyer Shoe store has been confined to his home for two weeks with a severe flu that developed into pneumonia. At last reports he was not recovering rapidly.
Buford Murray of Central Manufacturing has the town's only working radio outfit. He received a large amplifier and hosted visitors as the unit broadcast from Detroit and Schenectady. Programs included Pittsburg hospital benefit, Wisconsin market reports, and Army signals talks.
Mrs Milligan an elderly resident on East Broadway lies critically ill at home. Her son Joe Milligan who lives in Texas has been notified and is expected to arrive this week.
Funeral services for Mrs H L Anderson were held at the Kerrick chapel on Saturday with the Eastern Stars conducting the burial ceremony and Rev C L Tennant reading the service. She was the daughter of Mrs Clara Morrisson and sister of Mrs George Goeke, and a Fairfield High School graduate.
The body of John Walker is due this week from Brooklyn to Batavia for a full military burial by the American Legion post. Walker served as a private in Company M of the 163rd Infantry in France, saw action in the second battle of the Marne, was wounded at Lys Scheldt on October 31 1918 and died shortly after in an evacuation hospital. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery with a possible ceremony in the public park or at a local church or armory depending on weather.
The Democratic state central committee will run a Des Moines headquarters and wage an aggressive statewide effort until the November election. Chairman Feuling of New Hampton will spend most of his time at the state HQ, with the convention set for Des Moines in July.
Judge Vermillion presides as district court drags through a second week with lengthy arguments in the state versus John Crawford liquor case. Separately McBride is acquitted on theft charges and Percy Love’s charges are dismissed. Reed Finney pleads guilty to maintaining a liquor nuisance and pays a $300 fine. Chas Lyon versus A C Wisecarver remains before the court awaiting decision.
Prof C F Garrett is named superintendent for another year and most teachers are reelected. Minor staff changes include leave for Miss Cora Porter with Charles Fulton filling in. Schools list principal heads at Central Lincoln Logan and Washington with detailed grade assignments for each.
The Pleasant Plain consolidated school PTA held a Friday evening program for parents and teachers in the school auditorium followed by a social with refreshments. A repeat program is planned for Monday with public invitation. The seven doctors one act play Seven Doctors featured Rufus Sharp and a cast including Miss Lancaster Miss Chidhester Mr and Mrs Andrews and others.

Gibson states that under current laws a woman cannot hold a seat in the Iowa senate because qualifications mirror those for the state house, with the constitution restricting membership to male citizens. The view cites Justice DeGraff on voting rights and argues residence and citizenship rules apply equally to both chambers.
Guy Clinkenbeard died Tuesday morning at a Davenport sanitarium after weeks of illness. Born in Fairfield in 1874, he lived most of his life in the area and is survived by four brothers Joe of California J W of Des Moines David of Mt. Pleasant Bernie of Fairfield and a sister Mrs Samuel Kool of Nebraska.

Ladies Auxiliary asks bring sandwiches a dish of fruit and dishes for two. Rubies from Paris chem labs appear perfect and pass tests.
Announcement of the marriage of Miss Ruth Lyon daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Lyon of this city to Ralph Archibald of Davenport at Rock Island. They will reside in Davenport.

Fairfield mourns death of Judge Chas D Leggett who died at home April 8 after years of ill health including a paralytic stroke on February 16. Funeral at South Main Street home led by Rev Sears Thompson and Rev R Ames Montgomery. Born 1849 in Carrollton Ohio he came to Fairfield in 1855 and practiced law before serving on the bench from 1886. He leaves wife Beat rice Cunningham and four children Richard C Ruth McKee George P and Elizabeth with George dead in 1919 and Elizabeth teaching in Omaha.
Beginning Sunday April 9 a week of evangelistic meetings will be held at the Christian church ending Easter Sunday night with the cantata My Redeemer Lives performed by the choir under Mrs William Stever. The pastor and workers lead the services with a Friday planning prayer and consecration service at 7 30. All members urged to attend the daily week night services with public invited.
New York April 5 airplane patrols will be added to block bootlegger routes between Canada and New York. Prohibition agents Sum Tun ners A L Thomas and Charles Le Carron returned from a border tour predicting more air surveillance. They cited farmers selling snow clearing access to bootleggers and thousands of gallons smuggled at Buffalo by motor launches.
Mrs John Koontz died at her home northwest of Fairfield Sunday afternoon at age sixty five. A West Virginia native, she had lived in the county about fifty five years. Survived by husband and two children Mary Booth and Ross Koontz, both near the city. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday.
