Rev. W. A. Wolgemuth rejoices as church and parsonage improvements total 1200 dollars completed. The First Lutheran Church gains modern facilities with work by the Ladies Improvement Society, returning his family after a three month east visit.
The parsonage has undergone extensive modernization including a seven foot six inch deep cellar, brick walls, a 44 foot high furnace flue, hot air furnace, dust proof coal bin, new water system, bath and hot water tank. Walls repapered, floors refinished, electric lighting installed, and grounds graded with blue grass. Rev. Wolgemuth departs for Synod Cedar Rapids. last communion held October first. church invites attendance.
Troops from the maneuver division moved from San Antonio to Galveston and embarked for a two year tour in the Panama canal zone. Army units left San Antonio in September to begin the deployment.
Austin Texas Sept 27 Congress Morris Sheppard of Texarkana formally announces his bid for the Senate seat to succeed J W Bailey.
Secretary of the Interior Walter L. Fisher clashed with insurgent Senator Gunstow before President Taft and about 10 000 at the Kansas semi centennial in Hutchinson. Governor Stubbs introduced Bristow after Fisher attacked progressives, stirring the crowd as Taft read a Kansas history address.
Indiana authorities report Robert H. Green a former Montgomery county banker and farmer turned fugitive horse thief is in custody in Lancaster Pennsylvania. He was arrested there a few weeks ago and sentenced to jail on a horse stealing charge. Upon release he will be re arrested and brought back to Indiana.
Mrs Alexis B Jeffries mother of Jim Jeffries ex champion heavyweight pugilist died in Los Angeles after a long illness. She begged for a view of her son all afternoon as Jeffries and his brother rushed from Alaska where they had been hunting. Rev Alexis B Jeffries, the father, stood with her at the end.
Lawton Oklahoma September 27 W Joseph Eldridge a farmhand learned he is heir to the title and fortune of Earl Myers of Craig Castle Scotland.
Fairfield residents recall Miss Alice Pinch daughter of Rev and Mrs Pearse Pinch who gained musical success in Chicago. The Chicago Examiner reports her study across cities, Paris training with M. Jean de Reske, and forecast of becoming a grand opera star after a Palette and Chisel Club recital in Chicago.
The Des Moines Tribune reports Rev. George P. Magill of Central Presbyterian church circulated a letter to 3000 Iowa ministers urging support for a protest to President Taft over Secretary Wilson's Brew ers association convention. A stamped envelope was sent to each minister for the protest. Rev. Magill is the son of the late Rev. J F McGill, former Fairfield Presbyterian pastor.
Fairfield Masons anticipate a good time Thursday evening as the third degree will be conferred on Nat Howard. The work will be done by his uncle Hom C Clarke of Burlington. Invitations have been sent to nearby lodges and many visitors are expected. Refreshments will be served in the dining room after the business session. City members are urged to attend.
Council meets as seven bids for the city sewer system range from about 34 787 to 99 933 dollars and a 95 990 bid. The West disposal plant is postponed and new bids will be advertised. Donnegan and Lana are the closest bidders for sections and outlets with totals shown.
Word reached in this city of the death of Arthur Hoskinson in Shoshoni Wyoming last Tuesday due to hemorrhage of the lungs. Interment occurred there Wednesday. He was about forty five, a former Fairfield resident with five children Thomas Elmer Nellie Glen and Floyd whose homes are here. Survived by his mother Mrs Maggie Hoskinson a sister in Washington Sn and a brother in Ottumes. He was a member of the Fraternal Aid Association in Washington and carried a policy for his children.

Ottumwa and other Iowa cities prepare for President William H. Taft visit next week. A Burlington train from Des Moines to Ottumwa is scheduled with stops at Knoxville and Albia. The program includes school parades, a ball park ceremony, and a Wapello club dinner before departure at 3 30.
Ottumwa prepares for President Taft Friday with lavish decorations funded by public places and business groups. Sheriff Shan Campbell is named as a special guard due to trusted ability, joining regular guards along the president’s southern Iowa route.
Peter Faultman 14 and Philip Duff 15, guests in Chicago since Thursday, rode the Golden State Limited baggage car to Eldon Iowa, then walked back to Chicago with companion Walter Ryan 16. The Burlington Hawkeye notes officers were re-elected and next year’s convention was set for September 3 in Keokuk, with Burlington and Fairfield among suggested hosts.
Paris reports 204 dead or missing, 136 wounded, and 48 slightly injured from the Liberte catastrophe. Dr Cristan, aboard Verite, reached the Liberte just before a final explosion, surviving with burns while tending the wounded. He previously treated Gloire crew after a gun burst.
