Hospital trustees review a complete furnishings list for private rooms with an estimated cost of 150 to 200 dollars per room. The plan suggests community production of some items and color coding to ease laundry handling, with local merchants in Fairfield and surrounding towns offering reduced prices.
The new First Methodist Episcopal church at North Main and Saunders streets in Mt. Pleasant was dedicated Sunday afternoon. Bishop Earl Cranston presided with Dr. C. L. Tennant District Superintendent and former local pastor Rev. H. A. Ingham. The cornerstone laying marked the start of a major church project as crowds listened to a principal address by Bishop Cranston praising supporters and the undertaking.
Miss Pearl Glasgow and Ross Koontz, prominent county residents, were married Saturday evening at the home of Sim Sackett in Center township with Rev. S. B. Ross officiating. The couple plans to reside on a Center township farm after October first as a new house is being built.
A number of Fairfield residents have been selected for service during the October term of the United States court at Davenport. Grand juror H C McLean and petit jurors H Pontzino C M Junkin and H S Pattison were named for the term.
Two adjoining counties open simultaneous revival campaigns with new tabernacles. Washington hosts a 100 by 130 foot structure completed in two days, a large platform for a choir, and volunteer workers. Evangelists Dr Toy from Winona and J S Hamilton from Cleveland arrive with staff to lead sessions. Mt Pleasant follows with Henry county tabernacle and arrival of Prof T W Pearman and helper Bursk.
John T. Davies secretly married Emma A. Crawford of Hedrick Saturday evening at 7 30 after which the couple left for Chicago and then Atlantic City where Davies was bound for the Funeral Directors National convention. Friends learned of the nuptials Sunday morning.
A prank in Fairfield tied a horse to a library area hitch rack. Mr. Corless found the rig missing Monday evening and a search followed. The horse was recovered this morning in a junk yard behind South Court street, having torn the bridle and damaged the outfit.
Washington plans a major river to river auto highway crossing Iowa from Davenport to Council Bluffs via Muscatine Columbus Junction Washington Sigourney Knoxville Indianola Winterset Greenfield Griswold and Carson. The route will be mapped and marked with poles and signs and upgraded with cement culverts bridges and grading to attract automobile tourists and advertise the counties traveled. A naming contest offers a $10 prize as the road gains publicity through Iowa Publishing Co Des Moines and Automobile Blue Book Co Chicago.
Mt Pleasant faces calls for a new jail and courthouse amid repeated inmate escapes. The latest on Wednesday night saw Frank Conley break into and enter a bank car at Winfield, then force bricks from a rear wall to crawl through, escaping before deputies and city police could intervene.
Mrs G J Shaner Mary Cathrine daughter of J W and Martha J Quillen born Fairfield December 23 1874 died September 13 1911 at Glasgow stroke of apoplexy after frail health. She grew up in Fairfield attended public schools joined First Methodist Church August 5 1888 was active in church work choir and later Glasgow home. Married Charles I Shaner January 3 1904 four children Harry Jay Grace Edgar survive husband three brothers and one sister. She died with her face to the light in a devout Christian farewell with family and friends mourning.
Messrs Speilman and Fleagie, long time operators of the Orpheum Theater, have purchased the Centerville theater and will assume immediate possession. Captain Leo Moore, previously with the Orpheum, will oversee the new venue and depart today. Patrons will miss Mr Dioore, beloved by audiences.
Deputy Revenue collector John O Neal of Burlington enforces a rule from Washington requiring no cigars be given to employees unless from a government stamped box. Cigar factories face a tax of 3.06 dollars per thousand for cigars consumed by workers over the past two years.
John T Davies of J T Davies Furniture Company departs this afternoon for Chicago and Atlantic City N J to attend the National Funeral Directors Association national convention on September 20 21 and 22. He travels with Iowa’s five delegates and will visit New York Washington Philadelphia and Niagara Falls before stopping in Sharon Pennsylvania to visit his parents He expects to be away until about October first.
Fairfield observed Old Settlers Day with a large crowd despite threatening weather. A pioneer parade replaced the industrial parade, and relics exhibits drew interest as Rev John A. Brown of Abingdon delivered an oration amid period music and songs.
Ellsworth Turney buys 290 acres in Cedar township from Charles Cox for 160 dollars per acre through the Hague Land Co. Payment includes the Joel Turney residence at North Fourth and West Kirkwood, the East Broadway J T Davies Furniture Co block, and three North Main street Opera House lots. Cox plans to move his family to Fairfield around March 1.

Jefferson county resident Wilson Warner died Friday at his Batavia home after a brief illness from cancer. He was 72, a longtime Batavia leader and Justice of the Peace. Born in Indiana, he moved to Jefferson county as a young man and served in the Civil War with Company M, Fourth Iowa Cavalry. He married Rachel Sullivan in 1856. his wife and son Albert of Davenport survive him.
Mrs Mary H Wilson mother of Charles W and Clark Wilson proprietors of Wilson Bros groceries died at 7 30 pm Thursday at her home 209 North A Street after a long illness caused by complications of diseases.
